The Brunswick Historical Society's home is at the historic Garfield School, where it maintains a library and its collection of reference materials, photographs, and artifacts.

Mission: The Brunswick Historical Society shall bring together those persons interested in the discovery, collection, and preservation of historical materials as they relate to the town of Brunswick and Rensselaer County, New York. The Society shall also encourage and promote the perservation of historical buildings, cemeteries, monuments, and markers of local importance.

Today in Brunswick History: 2/21/1959- “Members of the C.B.F.D. are shown as they tested a new pumper this week at Frear Park. The volunteer firemen were given instructions on the use of the equipment, some of the most modern used for fire fighting.”

During the January 2019 meeting of the Rensselaer Co. Legislature, Harold Dean Riley of Brunswick, who served with the Army's 501st Division Infantry at the rank of E-4, in Vietnam, was awarded with several medals for his distinguished service. The Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart being among them.

This is the 100th anniversary of Heinrich Medicus’ birthday. From Brunswick and buried in the Eagle Mills Cemetery, Medicus, a RPI physics professor, gifted St. Peter’s Health Partners $10 million. A new five-story patient pavilion is named in honor of Medicus, while a new cancer center at St. Mary’s Hospital was named in honor of his late wife, Hildegard.

Every once in awhile, neighboring standouts are highlighted, such as the McChesney-Cluett house in Troy’s East Side. Built in 1875 for Dr. McChesney, this stupendous Victorian opened its doors for an Open House on Saturday. The current owners’ 12 month attention to detail renovation is praise worthy and potentially award winning.

One hundred years ago this month, World War I came to an end. At 11 a.m. on 11 November, 1918, 47 miles northwest of Paris in the Forest of Compiegne, German delegates met with Allied commander Ferdinand Foch and signed the armistice that ended the war.

Please join us on Monday, October 8 at 7pm for our exhibit opening, "Then and Now - A Look at our Local Volunteer Fire Companies" at the Garfield School, 605 Brunswick Rd., Eagle Mills. Our exhibit will show the old along with the new, changes that have taken place through the years. All fire companies within the town of Brunswick will have items on display, Brunswick 1, Center Brunswick, Eagle Mills, Mountain View and Speigletown. Light refreshments will be served.
