In conjunction with #WorldArtDay, we thought we would give you a preview of some of the artwork that is being prepared for our new Combat Art Gallery that opens in the summer of 2017.

Our inaugural exhibition in the new gallery is titled "Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2015," and will contain one hundred works of art by 21 artists. It will honor Marines who have served in the Corps during the last 40 years and echo the core values of the Marine Corps: honor, courage, and commitment.

The Combat Art Gallery is the first of many new spaces we will be opening as part of Final Phase. For more information, please see our website: http://j.mp/nmmcfinalphase

A New York Times Bestseller!

From the racetrack to the battlefield—dauntless, fearless, and exemplar of Semper Fi—she was Reckless, "pride of the Marines."

A Mongolian mare who was bred to be a racehorse, Ah-Chim-Hai, or Flame-of-the-Morning, belonged to a young boy named Kim-Huk-Moon. In order to pay for a prosthetic leg for his sister, Kim made the difficult decision to sell his beloved companion. Lieutenant Eric Pedersen purchased the bodacious mare and renamed her Reckless, for the Recoilless Rifles Platoon, Anti-Tank Division, of the 5th Marines she’d be joining.

The four-legged equine braved minefields and hailing shrapnel to deliver ammunition to her division on the frontlines. In one day alone, performing fifty-one trips up and down treacherous terrain, covering a distance of over thirty-five miles, and rescuing wounded comrades-in-arms, Reckless demonstrated her steadfast devotion to the Marines who had become her herd.

This Thursday November 10th is the 241st birthday of the United States Marine Corps.

On a shell-scarred ridge in eastern Korea, battle-weary veterans of the First Marine Division take time out to cut the cake celebrating their 176th birthday Nov. 10, 1951. No cake knife being available, the Leathernecks fell back on the trusty bayonet to slice the ceremonial cake. Complete with frosting and the Marine Corps' emblem, cakes were delivered to every Leatherneck unit in Korea on the historic occasion.
