STAGE GARDEN RUMBA (SGR) IS BACK LIVE IN SOUTH BRONX COMMUNITY GARDENS FOR 2021 SEASON!
ON JUNETEENTH, SATURDAY, JUNE 19, FROM 3PM TO 6PM, Nos Quedamos inaugurates another season of the Stage Garden Rumba (SGR) series—"Where Art Meets Green"—and this time around it's back LIVE for 2021!
Presented in partnership with Pregones/PRTT, SGR features theater, music, dance, literary, visual art, and social change makers of recognized merit. Our kickoff event honors and celebrates Afro Puerto Rican Bomba y Plena. Lineup includes Los Pleneros de La 21, Víctor Pablo Gaetán’s new music project Pafincar, David Hernaíz Concepción, Julia Gutiérrez-Rivera with Bomplenazo, and more!
3:00 pm – Los Pleneros de la 21 – LP21 is the premier music group of Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba & Plena music in the U.S., giving arts learning programs in NY & touring worldwide since 1983. Founded by National Heritage Fellow, Juan Gutiérrez.
3:40 pm – Bámbula Project – Alex “Apolo” Ayala’s Bámbula project is a vibrant and dynamic fusion of Afro-Puerto Rican “Bomba” rhythms with Jazz. A unique musical celebration of Afro-Boricua heritage and culture.
4:15 pm – PaFincar – Practitioners, lovers, and followers of Boricua music and culture convene to partake in this new group. Homegrown in the Island, seasoned in the Diaspora, with hints of urban delight, serving bomba Pafincar. With Victor Pablo Gaetán, Clara Díaz, Fernando García and Gabe Globus.
5:00 pm (Indoor & online) – “Pintando Figuras” Puerto Rican Visual Artists’ take on Bomba and Plena – Artist dialogue organized by Julia Gutiérrez-Rivera. Moderated by Mariana Reyes with Martín García, Güillo Cruz “Króniko Arte”, and Agua, Sol y Sereno. Co-presented with Bomplenazo and Hostos Community College CUNY. RSVP required for this indoor panel.

EPISODE 5 features lifelong visual/media artists with roots in The Bronx: Edwin Pagán is a photographer, filmmaker, and cultural activist with decades of experience as a maker, organizer, and advocate. His credits include leadership roles with Bronx Council on the Arts, Black Filmmaker Foundation, and NALIP/National Association of Latino Independent Producers. He is co-founder of PAX and Seis del Sur, undoing stereotypes by circulating authentic visual documents of the South Bronx. He is Founder In Chief of LatinHorror.com.
Melisa Ramos is a filmmaker, curator, and instructor with wide ranging experience in media production from concept to distribution. She is an award-winning digital artist/animator, and co-creator of 21 Islands International Short Film Fest, Bronx Film Wednesdays, and Short Cut NYC Cinemafest. She holds an M.A. in Film & Advertising, numerous credits include ESPN, HITN, HandMade, EContent, and more. She recently premiered a new music video for Puerto Rican indie band Bayamonster.

TONIGHT: Pregones/PRTT’s 'SPOTLIGHT: CREATIVES AT WORK,' a new series that offers inspiration plus provocations from performing artists and mediamakers of color, all agents of positive social change. FREE ONLINE on Mondays starting August 24th.
The series kicks off with photographers Joe Conzo, heralded by NYT as “The Man Who Took Hip-Hop’s Baby Pictures,” and Marisol Díaz-Gordon, awarded photojournalist, teaching faculty at CUNY City College, and former program director at En Foco, leader of cultural diversity in photography. UNTIL RAY — Three friends come together for a celebration and get more than they first expected. Inspired by Nicholasa Mohr’s short story “A New Window Display” from her book El Bronx Remembered. Written and directed by Sol Crespo and featuring Chad Carstarphen, Dominic Colón, and Omar Pérez.
NOMBRE EN PROCESO — This Puerto Rican music collective uses improvisation technique as base for creations that draw from Boricua folklore, rock, classical, and jazz influences. The group’s name translates as Name In Process. Led by Yaraní del Valle and featuring Dalziel López, Ricardo Soto, William Torres, and Joe Louis Vázquez.

FIRST UP: Enrico Caruso and Other Disasters – Precious Quiet Things I Call My Own. A bilingual tribute to acclaimed Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano, crafted in the singer-songwriter style of Latin American nueva canción and nueva trova. Written and performed by Don Rodríguez Gómez Rosa and featuring guest pianist Desmar Guevara.
This will be complimented by 'Old Habits,' a short film directed Mary Musolino. Synopsis: "A beach-side change-room becomes a confessional for two sisters, who are forced to decide if they have the strength to endure their respective marriages or the courage to leave."
