We, at SMA, are a community of Catholic missionaries who come from around the world with a commitment to serve the people of Africa. For more than 155 years, SMA missionaries have been present in Africa. We strive to be a living witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ among our brothers and sisters in that continent and among people of African heritage wherever they live. In keeping with our founder’s goal of preserving the culture of African peoples, the US Province of SMA maintains the African Art Museum in Tenafly, NJ – one of five maintained by the society.

Father Thomas Edward Hayden, SMA, Ph.D., was born on January 31, 1932 in Milton, MA. He became a member of the Society of African Missions on June 6, 1957. He was ordained a Priest on February 3, 1958.Ted, as he was known by the members of his religious community, served as a Catholic priest for over fifty-six years both in the U.S. and in Africa. Fr. Ted was a graduate of Boston College High School, and Catholic University. In 1976, he earned his Ph.D in Anthropology and African Studies from Howard University, where his research on the marriage traditions of the Grand Cess Kru (tribes in Africa?) is still used today. Fr. Ted’s constant pursuit of research and education reflected his strong value of continuous learning as a way to understand, and better serve the cultures and traditions of the African people with whom he worked so closely.
The final years of Fr. Ted's life were not spent in retirement but rather being with Liberians in one of the poorest places offering words of encouragement and guidance to those who came to visit him in his small simple house in one of the places where he first ministered as a missionary priest. Fr Ted died peacefully with his family by his side, on August 31, 2014 and went home to the Lord he served so well.
