Meet the judges: Melissa Lyttle
Melissa Lyttle loves chasing light and moments, both big and small. But more than that, she is committed to documenting the lives of people in her community and telling their stories in new and interesting ways.

Lyttle's work has been recognized by UNICEF, the Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism, POYi, the NPPA's Best of Photojournalism, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, the Southern Short Course and the Alexia Foundation.

She was a student at the Eddie Adams Workshop in 2001 and has been honored to return for the last 12 years as a member staff. There, she has mowed the grass, documented everything in sight as workshop photographer and coached a team of 10 students, helping them find and develop story ideas. She did all of that just to give back and further the photo community.

In 2001, she started APhotoADay, an online listerv, so photographers could share pictures and have conversations with colleagues around the globe. Today, the site has over 2,500 members and is the foundation for an annual meeting that draws renowned speakers and attendees. Her work with APhotoADay has brought together a like-minded, supportive community within a larger community that's spread out and divided by interests, egos and geography.

Lyttle is a Floridian, through-and-through. Born in Tampa and raised in Jacksonville, she went to the University of Florida in Gainesville and got her first job in Fort Lauderdale at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. In 2005, she was hired by the St. Petersburg Times (now the Tampa Bay Times), where she was lucky enough to work on everything from long-term documentary projects to breaking news to the “Dispatches from Next Door” series, all with an emphasis on the community she serves. She left the paper in late 2014, and is now freelancing and working on personal projects from her home base in St. Petersburg.
