Doel Reed Center for the Arts

Doel Reed Center for the Arts Multi-disciplinary creative center in Taos, New Mexico presented by Oklahoma State University

Oklahoma State University immediately recognized the potential when Martha Reed offered her alma Mater a unique opportunity to establish a multi-disciplinary creative arts center in the area of Taos, New Mexico, a locale that has legendary artistic heritage. Today, the Doel Reed Center for the Arts stands as a testament to her vision and generosity. Martha's father, Doel, helped establish OSU's Art Department and directed it until his 1959 retirement to the family property located on the scenic High Road southwest of Taos. The art community recognizes him as the "master of the aquatint," and many of the world's most prestigious museums still feature his aquatints, oil paintings, and drawings. He brought unprecedented acclaim to OSU, which has ensured his contributions will always be appropriately acknowledged by establishing this living laboratory on the family property, which Martha donated before her December 2010 passing.

Mission: The Doel Reed Center extends Oklahoma State University's reach into another state by offering programs characterized by synergistic, multidisciplinary approaches to teaching, research, and outreach focusing on the Southwest. OSU students and life-long learners explore diverse topics in this art mecca. While it's educational programs initially focused on the arts, their scope is expanding to include literature, history, interior and fashion design, native American Studies, architecture, agriculture, and other disciplines. It will build additional community partnerships, like the one existing between the Center and the Taos Art Museum, that foster collaboration, help meet the local and OSU educational needs, and stimulate local economic development.

At the age of 21, socialite and heiress Millicent Rogers eloped to marry the Austrian Count, tennis player, and actor Ludwig von Salm-Hoogstraeten. Her father did not approve of the match and cut her off from her trust, which perhaps expedited the dissolution of their hasty marriage. Already a favorite subject for tabloids, Millicent Rogers was hounded by both American and European photographers as she traveled back and forth from New York to Paris to seek a divorce and secure custody of their son Peter. She eventually won her case in court, but she and her son were continuously followed by tabloid journalists eager for the latest scoop on her family troubles. “Icon, American Style,” a new exhibit opening May 4th, will feature several rare tabloid photos of Millicent Rogers as well as family photographs, letters, magazines, archival material, clothing, and original jewelry designs. #millicentrogers #millicentrogersmuseum #icon #americanstyle #fashion #style #art #design #jewelry #museums #exhibit #taos

Taos Art Museum at Fechin House will present a solo musical performance by Classical Guitarist Rupert Boyd in the Fechin House on Saturday, April 27 at 5:30 pm.

“Remember the name Rupert Boyd. While there may never be another classical guitarist like Segovia, this young Australian left his audience with the impression that someday there may not be the likes of him again, either.” - THE WASHINGTON POST .

On April 26th, Boyd’s newest album album, The Guitar, is being released on the Sono Luminus label. For his Taos Art Museum at Fechin House performance, he will being playing selections from the album featuring works from J.S. Bach, through to The Beatles, and the living Australian composer Graeme Koehne. The album contains two “warhorses” of the classical guitar canon, Sor’s Mozart Variations and Brouwer’s Estudios Sencillos, and the remaining compositions on the album are what Boyd considers “some of the best works never written for guitar.” These include Bach’s majestic Suite in E Major, Jobim’s bossa nova songs Felicidade and Estrada Branca, and Piazzolla’s sultry tangos La Muerte and Milonga del Angel.

Planned as a staged move, the Couse photo collection in its entirety, which includes over 8,000 nitrate negatives, has already been moved to an undisclosed frozen storage facility in Taos. Next are the over 150 boxes containing letters, notebooks, sketchbooks, etc that represent the artistic and cultural patrimony of our country, and the people of Taos. Thank you Alan Ferg!

Artist Leigh Gusterson explains how her move to Taos changed the way she creates "Upon moving to Taos, my paintings got much brighter, more colorful, and looser … I’ve always loved painting outdoors, but in Taos I learned to paint outside in a very energetic, efficient and fast way, so I could pack up and get to the school in time to pick up my two daughters.”

Repost from 📷 @nationalparkservice
Chaco Canyon was a major center of Puebloan culture between AD 850 and 1250. For all the wild beauty of Chaco Canyon's high desert landscape, its long winters, short growing seasons, and marginal rainfall create an unlikely place for a major center of ancestral Puebloan culture to take root and flourish. Yet this valley was the center of a thriving culture a thousand years ago. The monumental scale of its architecture, the complexity of its ceremonial life, the high level of it's community social organization, and the far-reaching nature of its commerce combine to create a cultural vision unlike any other seen before or since.
