Last night we had a surprise special guest at Tompkins Lodge #471, the gentleman at the center of this photo in the blue shirt, a soon to be 54 year member of Tompkins Lodge, Brother Craig.

Members of our district may not know who Brother Craig is, many Brothers of Tompkins may not even know who he is, in fact no Brother in the room had ever physically met him before yesterday, but last nights visit was amazing for many reasons.

Brother Craig was raised a Tompkins Brother in June of 1964, a few years after that he moved to Anchorage, Alaska where he has lived for over 45 years. For those 45 years he was always just the envelope we put a communication in and mailed to Alaska, he paid his dues every year and even recently opted to receive our e-email communications.

This Brother hadn’t been to Staten Island or Tompkins for over 45 years, however his week he was here for his 60th year high school reunion and he came to see us, his Brothers. “How could I not?”, he told me, “this is the first time I’ve been to Staten Island in over 45 years, and very well may be the last time”. One by one as the Brothers arrived for the meeting they were introduced to Brother Craig, with many different reactions, the most common being “oh wow, the Alaska guy!”

We learned more about Brother Craig and his association to Tompkins; his father was a Brother here, his Grandfather, his Uncle, and his step Father too, some of their pictures hang on our South wall. He told us what the building and rooms used to look like, loved how the Lodge room looks in its current state, and spend quite some time re-exploring the building and checking out the historical items we have on display in the cases.

Brother Craig didn’t call anyone to let them know he was coming, he wasn’t coming for a pin or apron or anything, he knew we had a meeting and he just showed up! And every Brother who has ever worked on our Lodge communications over the years had the same reaction of “the Alaska Brother is here!? Awesome!”. Mailing or emailing 150 some odd Brothers in NY every month is one thing, but mailing to Alaska you notice over and over.

All the Brothers in attendance yesterday were truly treated to a special night, it was an honor to meet and speak to one our longest tenured living Brothers. So the next time you are preparing communications or notices to be sent out please keep this Brother and this story in mind. Despite being away from Staten Island for over 45 years he still considered Tompkins his home and just had to come to visit us during his limited vacation time here, a true Tompkins Brother!

United Grand Lodge of England

300 years ago today, four London lodges came together at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern in St Paul’s Churchyard, declared themselves a Grand Lodge and elected Anthony Sayer as their Grand Master. This was the first Grand Lodge in the world, and would later become us: the United Grand Lodge of England.

Today is a truly historic landmark for us – but also for Freemasonry and Grand Lodges around the globe. Few organisations can boast such a distinguished legacy, reaching back so many hundreds of years into the unknowable past – and so we can all be justly proud of how the Craft has so successfully adapted through the ages, while never renouncing our foundational principles or time-honoured values.

Please join with us and raise a glass to our 300th birthday. And here's to next three centuries which await us!

Despite the "blizzard" that hit NYC we had a great turnout last night. Our scheduled home cooked collation was traded for Mexican, which from the restaurant next door is just as good!

Right now, babies need all the help they can get. Premature birth affects about 380,000 babies here in the United States. I’m walking in March for Babies to get the message out about this terrible problem and you can help. Please make a secure donation to help me reach my goal. Together we can help…
