The Colonial Dames will honor Captain William Hillhouse who served in the American Revolutionary War. He fought as a private, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain in the South Carolina militia from 1775 to 1781. Hillhouse died in Starkville and is buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

We have some of Cheryl’s items on display in the Museum.

On September 8, 1979 Cheryl Prewitt from Ackerman was crowned Miss America 1980. Today, she is a Christian evangelist, author, and musician.

Prior to winning the Miss America pageant, she was Miss Mississippi '79 and Miss Starkville '79.

The Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum was honored to partner with Jennifer Jean, owner of Innovative Softworks, Inc., to bring the Confidence Matters Workshop to Starkville!

Nine local students participated in this inspiring day of learning, leadership, and personal growth—all at no cost to their families thanks to the generosity of our community sponsors and dedicated volunteers.

A special thank you to Melanie Greene, whose vision, leadership, and countless hours of planning made this workshop possible. Her dedication was instrumental in making the event a tremendous success.
