Custer, Idaho Empire Saloon and Gift Shop

Custer, Idaho Empire Saloon and Gift Shop Population peaked in 1896 at 600, only to become virtually a ghost town by 1911.

In 1879 Sammy Holman divided his mining claim as lots for the narrow, single main street town that extended a half-mile from the General Custer Mill to Chinatown.

As I sit in the meadow enjoying one last cup, listening to an elk bugle and watching the fog roll around me, I’m feeling incredibly grateful.

Thank you for spending the summer with us on the Yankee Fork—for visiting, following along, sharing stories, and supporting this special place.

Custer truly is magical, and a little piece of it stays with you long after you leave.

My posts will take on a different form now, but the stories will continue.

For now, I’ll finish my cup and soak in Custer for just a little longer. ❤️

And just like that, our 2026 season is wrapped up! ❤️

I’m so grateful for all the wonderful humans behind the scenes who make Custer the special experience it is for every person who visits.

It took 50 amazing people to help us close up for the season—and there were plenty of smiles, laughter, hard work, and, of course, great food along the way.

Thank you to our volunteers , friends, partners, and the U.S. Forest Service - Salmon-Challis National Forest for helping us care for this incredible place.

Custer truly takes a community, and we’re so thankful for ours. Until next season! ❤️
