The cookbook is officially FINISHED and heading to the printer!

Thank you so very much to TN First Lady Maria Lee for giving us a few of her own family recipes for our America 250 Spring Hill, Tennessee Cookbook! It is an honor to be able to share some of Mrs. Lee’s recipes as part of our America 250 project.

In the cookbook, a timeline of Spring Hill history will be printed all throughout! Before she passed away in 2024, Naomi Derryberry (an avid and knowledgeable Spring Hill historian) wrote the timeline with all the information she had collected through the years. We are sharing Naomi’s timeline for the first time in our one-of-a-kind cookbook!

The cookbook is on track to be released in July, possibly for our SHH&GS America 250 Open House! Below is the price of the cookbook and the membership discount broken down:

$25 for non-members of the SHH&GS.
$20 for individual (annual or lifetime) members (discount only applies to one copy.)
$20 for family (annual or lifetime) members (discount only applies for one copy per person named on your application.)

$5 off every cookbook purchase will be donated to Fire Belle ! Fire Belle is a 1957 Ford F-700 Seagrave fire engine that served as Spring Hill’s FIRST fire engine. The City of Spring Hill still owns the retired truck and is seeking donations to restore the historic vehicle. Help us help Fire Belle by purchasing your copy of the cookbook once it is released! We will only be printing 250 copies.

DID YOU KNOW: The first call in Spring Hill using the dial telephone system was made in 1939. Seen in this picture, Mayor James Polk “Jim” Odil made the first call upstairs in his home on Main Street. The call was made to Columbia Mayor Eldridge Denham. The dial telephone system had just been installed in Spring Hill and only 116 phone numbers were listed in the directory that year. A total of three lines ran to Columbia. Mayor Odil’s home on Main Street still stands today, now home to The Brunch Collective.

Due to the overwhelming amount of reservations for our America 250 Spring Hill, Tennessee Cookbook, we are going to halt reservations for the time being. Copies not already reserved will be sold on a “first come, first serve” basis when it is released next month.

We are only going to print 250 copies of this one-of-a-kind cookbook! Be ready to purchase your copy (cash or check only) as soon as the cookbook is released in July! (Details on an exact release date and how to purchase are forthcoming.)

🇺🇸 America’s Birthday with Dr. Tom Powers will be held on July 2nd, at 6pm, at Spring Hill City Hall. Join one of our very own board members as he explores America’s Birthday and why we celebrate it on July 4th! This will be an event you won’t want to miss!

AMERICA 250 SPRING HILL, TENNESSEE COOKBOOK: The cookbook is almost ready to send to the printer! We have only a few more things to fix and it will be ready to go. The cookbook will be sold at $20 for members of the SHH&GS, $25 for non-members. We will also be donating $5 off of every cookbook purchase to Fire Belle. Want to own a piece of Spring Hill history? We are selling original (11x17) copies of this Haynes Haven print! The print was created in 1994 by former Franklin, TN artist, Marvin Stalnaker, who was well-known for his artwork depicting Franklin history. We have many copies available and they are $10 each. REMINDER: Tomorrow at 5:30pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Spring Hill, we will be hosting our June Gathering themed “Spring in Spring Hill!” One of our very own board members, Dr. Tom Powers, is going to ask questions about what springtime was like in “Old Spring Hill.” This gathering is going to be very fun and informative, and we hope to see you there! Everyone is welcome, no matter if you are new to the area or have lived here for your entire life. If you are a longtime Spring Hillian, we look forward to hearing your stories of Spring in Spring Hill’s past!

📸 HISTORIC PHOTO OF THE MONTH: This month’s historic photo is of Main Street in the 1980’s. (The below history was written by Benny Jett, President of the SHH&GS.)
This photo shows Main Street in the 1980’s looking north towards the current site of Abundant Provisions (historically the Dr. Gorham Wing Home/Doctor’s Shoppe) and the Spring Hill Chamber of Commerce (historically the John S. & Charlie Odil Home.) People can be seen walking across the highway safely towards the old Children’s Home property, and a policeman had parked on the sidewalk in front of Spring Hill Elementary School. At the top of this photo, the Spring Hill water tower can be seen on McLemore Avenue. If you drive to the intersection of Kedron Road and Main Street, look to your right and you can still see roughly the same image, just with a little more traffic!
