Earth, Air, and Space Collaboratory Building community to celebrate this National Historic site and tackle humanity’s Engineering Grand Challenges
(23)

The history of the Earth, Air, Space Educational Foundation began with a vigorous grassroots effort of the local community to bring purpose and energy to saving and restoring Hangar One in Shenandoah Plaza National Historic District on Moffett Federal Airfield. The core members of this effort are founding members of the Foundation. The Collaboratory is inspired by a birthplace of the Silicon Valley which contains Moffett Field, a National Historic Site; and Ames, our Nation’s Second National Research Center. Our vision is to restore our past and incubate a more vibrant future for our community, humanity and our planet. The Collaboratory will be an open forum where the public, educators, and industry can gather together to explore our past, share solutions to Engineering’s Grand Challenges facing humanity, and thereby discover our future together.

Moffett Field was a combination of Top Gun and Skunk Works for many years

The US Navy’s busiest airfield on the west coast, Moffett Field, was a "Master Jet Base" that serviced ALL the carrier based aircraft in the Pacific throughout the 50’s and into the early 60’s.

The “Right Stuff” has been developed at Ames Research Center since the beginning. From Aircraft DeIcing still used to today to Apollo’s Computers. From Space Shuttle’s heat shield tiles to GPS to innovative Earth environmental monitoring equipment, Ames Research has changed the world we live in and continues to do so in many ways, hidden to most of us.

The synergy of Moffett Field is a key reason Charles Lindbergh recommend to Congress that the 2nd National Aeronautics Research Center be located in the Santa Clara Valley. In following years, the American West was responsible for much of the development of Aviation and Space Technologies, and Moffett and Ames were at the heart of that effort.

Ames continues to be at the leading edge science and new space ventures and history remains ready to be created by new generations

Grand Challenges for Engineering

The National Academies were formed by President Lincoln, to advise congress and the white house on issues of science. Today, elected by their peers, 6,300 of the brightest minds in america, help shape the future. With input from people around the world an international group of leading technological thinkers were asked to identify the Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st Century.

The Earth, Air, & Space Educational Foundation proposal reflects these challenges and will serve to bridge the largest concentration of mathematicians physicists, chemists, and engineers in the world to the our next generation and generations thereafter, so they can change the world like we did, only better.

With input from people around the world -- much of it on this website -- an international group of leading technological thinkers were asked to identify the Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st Century. Their conclusions created this website. From urban centers to remote corners of Earth, t...
