Tankerdan's Land of Armored Vehicles
Greetings friends. Here is a treat, a Cold War warrior, The M901 ITV (Improved Tow Vehicle). Introduced in 1979, and designed to carry the M220 TOW anti-tank missile launcher, based on the workhorse M-113 APC. The vehicle was serviced by a crew of (4), squad leader, gunner, loader, and driver. The ITV carried two ready to launch TOW missiles in a "hammerhead" turret that raised and lowered above the vehicle, turned 360°, and elevated +35°/-30° The vehicle carried ten additional missile reloads stowed in the interior. In addition the TOW system could be dismounted from the ITV and used as a ground system in 3-5 minutes.
M901 employed the M220A1 TOW
M901A1 employed the M220A2 TOW 2
(This vehicle is on display at the American Military museum in El Monte Ca, the attached photos are of this vehicle)
M901A3 employed the M220A2 TOW 2, but used the M113A3 chassis.
This system is no longer in use by US forces, it still serves 10 allied nations. It saw active war service during the first Gulf War and the Iraq War.
Note: TOW stands for Tube launched, Optically tracked, Wire guided.
