We interpret Shelter Island's past and on-going life through historical material from the first inhabitants, settlers, and town fathers, to those who have made it a caring and unique community through the years. We strive to preserve the Island's heritage for future generations. (Shelter Island Historical Society: Constitution and By-Laws, Article III, Mission. Adopted by the Shelter Island Historical Society Board of Trustees in August 2012.) The Shelter Island Historical Society is a proud member of the following organizations: Association of Suffolk County Historical Societies (ASCHS) American Association for State and Local History (AASLH): www.aaslh.org American Alliance of Museums (AAM): www.aam-us.org Long Island Museum Association (LIMA): www.longislandmuseumassociation.org Shelter Island Chamber of Commerce: www.shelterislandchamber.org Suffolk County Historical Society (SCHS): www.schs-museum.org

It's holiday time! Who remembers attending the bonfire at Lily Pond and ice skating on Fresh Pond? Did you have a holiday dinner at the Country Club and go to The Legion for their New Year's celebration?

This postcard to Mrs. A. S. Cartwright, postmarked 1909, reads:

Dear Mrs. Cartwright,
I did think to write to you before going back but guess I'll have to wait until I get back to Jersey. We all expect to go back Sunday. I have lots to say to you but will have to wait til I write again. Best wishes for a happy new year.

Will it keep you up at night wondering what the writer had to say? It sounds important! We sure wish we had the next letter.

An interesting feature of this postcard is the 1-cent stamp. From 1872 to the end of 1916 the postcard rate was 1-cent. It was increased to 2-cents as a wartime measure and when World War I ended at the end of 1918, it was lowered back to the pre-War 1-cent.

The Shelter Island Historical Society Staff and Trustees wish you a wonderful holiday and a happy New Year. #shelterislandhistoricalsociety #shelterislandhistorycenter #happynewyear

November means Thanksgiving with families getting together to gorge on turkey and stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, but there was a time on Shelter Island when turkey was a luxury and our celebration dinners were homegrown vegetables and hunted meat. We couldn't find a recipe for turkey in any of our old cookbooks, but here is one for duck, short on vegetables but long on fat and onions. It comes from "The Rumford Complete Cookbook" that belonged to Fannie Cartwright and is dated 1912. It sounds so good that I think I'll give it a try.

Yesterday we had a wonderful visit from the Shelter Island Union Free School District Faculty. They toured the newly constructed Shelter Island History Center, including our new climate-controlled 425 sq. ft. Archival Vault containing 100,000 documents relating to Island history. The Faculty viewed our Havens DIMONscape, a multilayered digital piece of artwork depicting the history of the Havens House and family. (Fun fact: another DIMONscape is part of the permanent collection of the 9/11 Tribute Museum!) We are excited to begin working on our many ideas for collaboration! @ Shelter Island Historical Society

Cheese! Who doesn't love it? Come have a taste this week at the Havens Farmers' Market. Russel Glover, co-founder and owner of Consider Bardwell Farm, will cut you a slice. Russel and his wife Angela are committed to pasture-raised dairy and land conservation in Vermont. Their hay and pasture lands are Certified Organic and part of the Federal Grassland Reserve Program. They rotate goats, cows, and chickens to sustainably build the fertility of their pastures. This creates the high quality milk used in their delicious cheese. You can really taste the difference. Visit Russel and our other great vendors tomorrow from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm!

Labor Day may have come and gone but the Havens Farmers' Market is here to stay for all of September! Stop by The Shelter Island History Center tomorrow and visit KK's The Farm.
Ira and the late KK Haspel bought their farm in Southold in 1999 and began farming it Bio-dynamically. Ira carries on this tradition with the help of Sonomi Obinata, growing beautiful flowers and delicious heirloom vegetables. The farm focuses on building a healthy, living soil that creates healthy plants and, in turn, healthy humans! Try their tomatoes and taste the difference! Come visit them and our other great vendors tomorrow from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. See you there!

She currently resides in Boulder, CO and has been showing her work throughout Colorado and Arizona. After receiving multiple awards in 2016 and 2017, she was recently selected as the finalist to complete a large Public Art Project for Colorado's Mental Health Institute in Pueblo, CO. We will have a limited selection of Tabitha's beautiful work for sale during this Saturday's Havens Farmers' Market. Please don't miss this opportunity to experience her inspiring pieces!!
