Shelter Island Historical Society Archives and Community Events

The mission of the Shelter Island Historical Society is to research, preserve and share our heritage and island history through education, exhibition, scholarship and community events. We interpret Shelter Island's past and on-going life through historical material from the first inhabitants, settlers, and town fathers, to those who have made it a caring and unique community through the years. We strive to preserve the Island's heritage for future generations. (Shelter Island Historical Society: Constitution and By-Laws, Article III, Mission. Adopted by the Shelter Island Historical Society Board of Trustees in August 2012.) The Shelter Island Historical Society is a proud member of the following organizations: Association of Suffolk County Historical Societies (ASCHS) American Association for State and Local History (AASLH): www.aaslh.org American Alliance of Museums (AAM): www.aam-us.org Long Island Museum Association (LIMA): www.longislandmuseumassociation.org Shelter Island Chamber of Commerce: www.shelterislandchamber.org Suffolk County Historical Society (SCHS): www.schs-museum.org

The Havens Farmers' Market's Vendor of the Week is K Gallery. Owner Karen Springer grew up in Colombia and now lives on Shelter Island. She grew up fascinated by the crochet bags—mochilas—and jewelry of the indigenous Wayuu people. A dream came true when Karen visited the Wayuu tribe. Sadly, she witnessed the poverty of these amazing artisan people. This motivated her to work directly with the Wayuu to create bags of her design. The beautiful mochilas take up to three weeks to make. Come see these spectacular pieces and Karen's handmade jewelry tomorrow from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.

We are very excited to present an array of Carol Wilson's artwork at the Shelter Island Historical Tent at Havens Farmers’ Market. Carol is a talented and versatile artist who is widely respected for her sensitive portrayals of people, animals, houses, beachscapes, island scenery and wildlife since 1967. Founder and proprietor of the Island Gallery Shelter Island New York 1968-2003, she also headed the art department at the Shelter Island School 1972-1991 and taught visual arts to the children. Stop by our table and browse through her collection of several island scenic views in 8 x 10 prints.

This photo of Oscar is from our Archives, but we do not have any info about this mysterious, bearded fellow. If you could fill in some blanks in our Cartwright history, we’d love to hear from you! #bearded #fathersday #greatbeard #greatresponsibility

It's #thankfultuesday and today we are thankful for Nate Phillips, owner and operator of Alice's Fish Market. Some of you know Nate from the Alice's Fish Market tent at our Havens Farmers Market and some of you know him from the Raw Bars at our Black & White benefit and our Oyster Tasting. But did you know Nate provides the Raw Bars for both of our events out of the kindness of his own heart and in support of our mission? That's right, for several years now Nate has provided all the oysters, clams, sauces, ice, shuckers, equipment and more as in-kind donations to show his support for the Historical Society. As you can imagine, we are extremely thankful for him, his employees and our partnership! If you haven't already, we encourage each of you to visit Nate at Alice's Fish Market, thank him for his support and take home some of the freshest fish around from one of the best guys we know.

The annual Oyster Tasting is a fundraiser for the Shelter Island Historical Society which celebrates a time in history when oysters were a thriving industry on the East End. The Oyster Tasting features images from the Shelter Island Historical Society archives, highlighting the Shelter Island Oyster Company. In addition to the educational component, the event has evolved into an Island tradition during a busy 5k weekend. Attendees savor local raw oysters, oysters Rockefeller, cheese and charcuterie, crudité, local beers and wines and cultivate a relationship with the gatekeeper of their island history.
