FROM THE MUSEUM COLLECTION: This wooden mug which reads "Prospect 1904" was perhaps a memento from a summer's stay at the Prospect House, which was - along with the Manhanset House - one of the two major hotels on Shelter Island and the social center of the Heights in those days. Visitors would come out from the city and beyond to spend their days boating in the harbor, playing croquet on the lawn, and golfing on the green. At night, people would waltz to live music and dine in the cool evening air - maybe this mug accompanied one of those meals!

This mug was donated to the Historical Society in 1986 by Alma Ryder.

Following the death of her husband, Gen. Sylvester Dering in 1820, Esther Sarah Havens Dering took over the management of the farm and property at Sylvester Manor. Her daybook accounts from 1825 -1828 of daily life at the Manor include payments in kind to workers providing services for the estate. These payments were primarily to Free People of Color who lived on Shelter Island and who had previously been enslaved. The daybook, which is housed at the Shelter Island Historical Society, gives us a glimpse of how the farm and Manor House were run and who were working on the property at that time.

Among those listed in the daybook are several women who provided Esther Sarah with service and whom she paid with a variety of goods including foodstuffs and fire wood. The Dering family was cash poor following several years of financial hardship after the Revolutionary War, however Esther Sarah’s accounts show that she managed to keep the estate solvent. Among the listings are payments of cheese to Diana Williams, a formerly enslaved woman who became a property owner on Shelter Island. Dinah Rock Road is named after a rock that she was known to sit on while fishing. Julia Havens, who had inherited land from her stepfather near the Manor, was a constant presence at the Manor and Esther Sarah lists payments to her for doing the washing. Another formerly enslaved woman referred to as “Old Violet” also regularly received payments of molasses, wheat and souchong tea.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!
The Friday evening ferry arriving to the Island was nicknamed the "Daddy Ferry" because the working men from Manhattan or Brooklyn would travel to the Island to spend the weekend on Shelter Island with their family.

FROM THE MUSEUM COLLECTION: This leather bag was used at the Shelter Island House on Stearns Point Road sometime in the early 20th century. The bag is reinforced with metal rivets and can be locked closed, so presumably it was used to transport something of value, like mail sent to hotel guests or cash spent at Louis' Arbor - the popular restaurant run by the hotel's owner, Alois J. (Louis) Behringer (the namesake for Louis' Beach).

The Shelter Island House was originally called Meinhardt's Hotel when it was founded in 1896. Louis and his family took over the ownership of the hotel in 1905 and three generations of Behringers continued to own and operate the hotel until its sale in 1972 to David and Christine McCabe.

This bag was donated to the Historical Society in 1980 by the Behringer family.

HI, I'm wondering first can I post old photos from Shelter Island? If you able to identify who the people are in the pictures? I will post one picture now. I do know the man in the back row with the white hair is Edward W. Payne. He walked the young bride down the isle. Does anyone else know who the people are? I do have another picture from the Wedding. (privacy on this site wouldn't let me post the picture, but I can send it in email) The picture was taken I think about late 1950 .
*Help Support the Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery Memorial Campaign* The Descendants of Sailors’ Snug Harbor Mariners have been reaching out to the Greater New York City Metro Area Heritage (Historical and Genealogical) Societies, Museums, Military Veterans Groups, and Concerned Citizens, to invite them to join a Letters of Support Campaign to support their efforts to gain access to the old Sailors’ Snug Harbor Cemetery on Staten Island to honor their Ancestors, and all of the 6,500 Merchant and Naval Mariners interred there (1834-1976), by installing a Memorial Monument (Obelisk) and holding an annual Memorial Service. Sadly, the Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery is devoid of gravestones or markers, except for 15 remaining gravestones. The Cemetery is closed and not open to the public. The Board of Trustees of Sailors' Snug Harbor have rejected the Descendants' requests to access the SSH Cemetery to honor their Ancestors. The Descendants are collecting Letters of Support to persuade the Trustees of Sailors’ Snug Harbor to change their decision.
