It's a BIG day at Shawnee Town 1929! Sharron Uhler, our Curator of Collections is RETIRING after fifteen years with us. We are going to miss her creative spirit, her willingness to try new things and her love for the children. She has brought so many incredible programs, classes and special events to the museum over the last fifteen years. We wish her all the best with her retirement! Please feel free to leave your well wishes in the comments below.

Paws Up KC

Check out the latest video from Paws Up KC! The chickens LOVED being read to!!

I’ve been super busy trying to get ready for the start of school, but I’ve also still been reading at the shelter and visiting local businesses. I have a lot of video footage that I have made in the last few weeks that I will start to edit and post. And I’m doing more GIVEAWAYS and PARTNERSHIPS than ever!
Thank you so much for being patient and encouraging while I figure out how to juggle it all.

Today I wanna share with you a special #RescueReader Tuesday I filmed at Shawnee Town 1929 in Shawnee, Kansas, of course!

They have a special program tonight starting at 7 PM about women’s suffrage. This is the one hundredth year of women winning the right to vote and they will have some special guests (or ghosts) coming from the past.

But also… I really want you to stop by between now and next week because I’m giving away a picture book and a middle grade book to the first people that go into the gift shop and ask! I also printed some very special stickers drawn by one of my parents!!! So stop in to the gift shop and ask if there’s any PawsUp KC goodies left. 😍

Big Chickens is an adorable book written by Leslie Helakoski and The House With Chicken Legs is by Sophie Anderson. These are both such fun books. I get them both four out of four paws, seriously I would give them five if I could.

Aside from visiting with the chickens, it’s nice to bring lunch when you visit Shawnee Town. There’s a lot of cool places to take photos or selfie’s. You’re going to see things you’ve maybe never seen before like old typewriters or old wall phones. So please come visit!

Join us tonight for Notable & Notorious People of the Twenties!

Alice Paul and the National Women's Party were the first people to ever picket the White House. It was scandalous! Tonight she will protest President Woodrow Wilson and she will tell her story. It's a free event at 7pm at Shawnee Town. Social distancing practices will be in place, so reservations are required.

Big, huge shout out to Maureen and Royal!! Thank you SO very much!! I have really been missing home and these ladies took the time to send t-shirts to me! Go get yourself some Shawnee swag from these wonderful ladies! #representingshawneeincolorado.
Missing Old Shawnee Days that was scheduled for next weekend. I was involved with Shawnee Days for 40 years starting in 1967 with the Shawnee Jaycees, Shawnee Historical Society, and Friends of Shawnee Town. Although I haven't been involved the last several years, I will always remember the many memories and people that I became acquainted with. What a great place. Here is to Old Shawnee Days 2021
Love bringing our rides to your carshow....one the best
Love this pic! It reminds me of a Norman Rockwell painting!
A huge thank you to Sharon and Janet, curators at the farm house in Old Shawnee Town 1929. You went out of your way and provided Troop 562 with a valuable cooking lesson, tour of the grounds and boundless knowledge about farm life in the 1920’s and 30’s. And we got to churn our own butter! Can’t wait to bring the girls back this summer and check on progress in the garden!
Yes we are open today!!!! I'm setting here all alone so come visit me and get stocked up on everything Shawnee.
I love the 1920s & Kansas. Wanted to share this great review today for Somewhere Still from the Historical Novel Society out of Ireland! It will appear in their May magazine! https://historicalnovelsociety.org/reviews/somewhere-still/ (warning: spoiler alert) https://amzn.to/2COHoPb
I know it's not related to the 1920s, but I regularly run into people who comment on one thing and one thing only when I mention Old Shawnee Town... "Where the heck did the sod house go?" Everyone asks that! So I wish your larger property would bring the sod house back but to be honest with you, it needs to have Native representation as well. This is "Shawnee Mission", Kansas. Algonquin Indigenous (including the Shawnee) were forced to come here and they were active participants in shaping where we now live. Nothing about Old Shawnee Town demonstrates or acknowledge's that those were people and communities that we even now have named our towns and streets after. And while I know that Shawnee Indian Mission exists, that only adds to my surprise that your nonprofits have not collaborated on a more accurate portrayal of Shawnee life. I literally live one block down the street from you and I would love to make this a larger, educational part of my daughters childhoods, but I won't teach them selective history. If you want to make your museums and properties more relevant, I think it would be nice to see you include the full concept of what was going on here in the eras you showcase.
Thanks for hosting such a wonderful event! We had a great time!
New Pockets Dolls, multiple headbands, a beautiful rock, and a poncho made her a happy girl. The ice cream was just an added bonus.
Getting some new Mandalas done just in time for the craft fair! Come find me!
