As Halloween approaches, let's gather around the fire and share one of the oldest recorded ghost stories in Harpers Ferry from Joseph Barry's "The Strange Story of Harper's Ferry."
In 1799, 223 years ago, the United States was on the brink of war with France (called the Quasi War). George Washington came out of retirement to command the Army, establishing several large military encampments within the eastern U.S., including one at Harpers Ferry.
At that time, Harpers Ferry was a tiny village with only a handful of homes, a few mills, and a ferry crossing. It soon hosted hundreds of soldiers from Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania in the fall and winter of 1799-1800. As winter approached, many soldiers in the Harpers Ferry camp became sick and died. Their bodies were buried on the slopes of Camp Hill.
Years later, residents claimed that the soldiers' spirits "hover still around the scene of their earthly campaign....in the stilly night are the weird notes of their fifes and the clatter of their drums heard."
Visit the Camp Hill area of the park today--can you hear the shrill voice of the fife or the pounding of the drums?

We finally managed to learn how to deal with the unpredictable rain and winds of hurricane forecasting for our area.
In October 2012 we were touring with a small group of friends when the first outer bands of Hurricane Sandy drifted over Sharpsburg. Although the rain was light it was steady. Still our group felt like it wasn’t that bad and off we went into the misty rain. At tour time the temperature was reasonable, I think it was mid 50s.
Back then our tour took 3 hours, and that was plenty of time for Sandy to show it wasn’t just light misty rain. One of our group didn’t even have a jacket, but he persisted that the tour continue as the rain and winds intensified. So on we went.
Some of you may have seen Caddyshack and the scene where the Bishop is playing in a light rain at first, but the storm gets worse and worse. That’s what happened to us. We slogged through 3 very wet and windy hours all the way to the finish. And the temperature fell into the 30s! Our jacketless friend was soon soaking wet and chilled to the bone.
Lesson 1 Completed: we learned not to expect just light rain from the outer bands of a hurricane!
A few years later we had a large tour with 20 or so reservations. The forecast was again for rain and wind from a hurricane moving up the coast. Taking into account Lesson 1, we called the tour off by email around noon on the tour date.
The storm never materialized in our area. It was cloudy but not wet, and not windy. The tropical October temp were in the 60s. Having a free Saturday night in October is a rare thing for us, so we decided to go to Captain Bender’s in Sharpsburg.
That’s when we found out that cancelling on the tour date still can be a major inconvenience. The tavern was full of people who expected a tour and hadn’t received our email cancellation. Some were furious, and all were miffed.
Lesson 2 Completed: Give people plenty of notice.
This week we’ve monitored Ian’s progress since Tuesday. With no certainty of a storm path, we were uncertain what to do or when to do it. Wednesday Florida got crushed. And on Thursday we knew that our area would have less than favorable weather today, Saturday. So it was time to cancel.
Emails were sent early Thursday to the many we had received reservations from, and immediately we received replies thanking us for the early notice.
Lifelong learning is a blast. 😊🌀

Question heard tonight: When do ghosts die?
Question asked on last night’s tour:
How do you make ghosts appear?
