Press Release: Sevierville, TN, Smoky Mountain Gospel Jubilee Celebrates 10 Years!

JP Miller has a lot to smile about! His local radio and television show celebrates 10 years on the air this month. The Smoky Mountain Gospel Jubilee broadcasts each Monday at 6pm from Ogle Furniture Outlet on Dolly Parton Parkway in Sevierville, TN.

Ten years ago, Miller received a call from Ron Ogle. Ron and his wife Betty are local business owners and involved in many community charities. Ron asked JP to start a radio show on Praise 96.3/WJBZ from Ogle Furniture Outlet during the week. Ogle asked Miller to call his gospel music friends and have them appear on the show and he would pay for everything. He envisioned a “Cass Walker” type show where the public could watch the radio program live.

Miller states: “When Ron asked me to do the show, I thought it would last a few months. I had no idea what we had on our hands!” The program was an instant hit. Since that first program, people have flocked to the Ogle Furniture Outlet on Monday nights at 6pm for the Smoky Mountain Gospel Jubilee. It has become a staple in the community for locals and tourists alike. The show became so popular they decided to put it on television and Facebook Live.

Over that past decade, over 70,000 people have attended in person with over 400 different gospel music artists and guests appearing on the program. The show features both local and national talent. Many headliners in the gospel music community have appeared on the show including Triumphant Quartet, The Kingdom Heirs, Tony Gore, and Phil Cross. The program also has featured gospel music icons Calvin Newton, Ann Downing, and Sue Dodge. There have even been some movie and television stars appearing on the show like Lu Lu Roman from Hee Haw, Victoria Jackson from Saturday Night Live, and Grayson Russel who has appeared in such movies as Taladega Nights and Dairy of A Wimpy Kid.

“To last on any media platform for 10 years is a real accomplishment” states Miller. “I have many folks who help me each week to put the show together. There are also weekly sponsors who have joined the Ogles in helping promote the show. Tony Gore’s Smoky Mountain BBQ, KARM Thrift Store, and Riverbend Campground sponsor the program as well.”

During COVID, the show has continued to broadcast from the studio of Praise 96.3 and will return to their live format on Monday, April 12, 2021 at 6pm with special musical guest, Michael Combs.

“I would like to thank Ron and Betty Ogle for the opportunity to host this show. It has become a part of my life and my ministry. The program has encouraged and helped countless people. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters anyway. I hope we can go for another 10 years! As long as people enjoy the program, we will keep doing it.”

To My Gospel Music Family, In just a few days, it is my understanding that nominations will be accepted for the 2021 inductees into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame. This is the highest honor given to our Gospel Music family. There is perhaps no one more qualified on their musical talent and merit alone, than Jimmy Swaggart. With nearly 18 million recordings sold, over 60 years of ministry, and a television network that spans the globe, his accomplishments speak for themselves. Some of Gospel Music’s greatest singers have come thru his ministry, such as Janet Paschal and John Starnes. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, it was not uncommon for Brother Swaggart to have multiple songs in the Top 40 at any given time. His television network (SonLife Broadcasting Network) plays our style of Gospel Music every day, literally all over the world. Many of our top songs are sung regularly on SBN by their singers and band, along with Brother Swaggart’s own music. And our people are watching! I have been honored to speak and appear on SBN many times. At almost every southern gospel event I attend across the country, random people will walk up to me and say they have seen me on SBN (or as they call it, “Jimmy Swaggart’s channel”). Brother Swaggart turns 86 in March. Let’s get him in the Hall of Fame this year so that he and his family can celebrate together! On merit and accomplishments alone, Jimmy Swaggart deserves to be in the SGMA Hall of Fame. I am asking you to make sure that he is part of our 2021 class of inductees. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Pastor Bill Bailey P.S. Only current members of the Southern Gospel Music Association are eligible to submit nominations for the Hall of Fame. I highly encourage you to join the SGMA and be a part of the process! It’s only $20 per year. To join or for more info, go to http://www.sgma.org. P.P.S. While I am actively speaking out on Brother Swaggart’s nomination, I do realize there are other very worthy people to consider. Each SGMA member is allowed to nominate four people for the Hall of Fame. In addition to Brother Swaggart, these are the others that I am nominating and why: 1. Karen Peck Gooch – She has already been inducted into the GMA Hall of Fame. I am personally disappointed that we did not induct her first. 2. Aaron Wilburn – His passing was tragic. His songwriting and career are definite Hall of Fame status. What a beautiful gift we would give Aaron’s family and his legacy by putting him in the Hall of Fame this year. 3. Sue Dodge – She is perhaps the most tenured female singer in our Gospel Music family that is not currently in the Hall of Fame. With over 50 years of service, she has waited long enough.
I have a simple question — what happens to all of the bricks that were purchased by people in memory and dedication of family and friends ???

Is there a way we can financially support Christian musicians? They have given so much to us and have encouraged me and my faith walk with Jesus and I would like to financially help Christian musicians! Can we get a group together and support them financially? ❤️
June 30th 1954 people say Gospel Music changed...the Blackwood Brothers legacy changed when my father and Bill Lyles lost their lives in a tragic airplane crash in Clanton, Alabama. Just a Couple of weeksearlier The Blackwood Brothers had brought Gospel Music to America on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts show in New York City. No gospel group had ever accomplished this before. For many Americans it was the first time they had ever seen a gospel quartet or even heard a gospel song and the Blackwoods gospel music took New York and the USA by storm. To quote a phrase, “They were the toast of America”. Most Americans had never heard a velvet smooth bass like Bill Lyles...they had never heard the beautiful voice of a tenor singer like Bill Shaw...the magnificent trained voice of a lead singer like James Blackwood...the beautiful baritone harmonies and leads of RW Blackwood (mine and Ron’s dad). America loved the Blackwood Brothers. And then...the terrible tragedy of that day , June 30,1954 happened. Yes, Gospel Music lived on, and The Blackwood Brothers lived on with JD Sumner on the bass and my Uncle Cecil Blackwood who joined the group to sing baritone and the legacy continued. I even traveled and sang with the group on many occasions, singing my father songs. I was 11 years old when I sang in Clanton, Alabama at the Memorial concert given to memorialize my dad RW, and bass singer Bill Lyles as pictured below my mother Elaine, and older brother Ron, one month after the plane crash. It was also JD Sumner and Cecil Blackwood’s first nite with the new group. Pictured also with my mother Elaine and me is Ruth Lyles, Bill Lyles Jr. and Gary Lyles, and the re-organized Blackwood Brothers in Jackson, Mississippi on another memorial concert. The Blackwood Brothers continued, but my mother lost her husband...Ron and I lost our father; Ruth lost her husband...Billy, Gary, and Curt lost their father. Our whole world crashed that day. My heart still breaks as I write this on June 30th, 2020. ONLY JESUS could have brought us through this terrible tragedy but the pain is still as real on this day as it was on that awful day.

Happy birthday today to Neil Enloe! He was inducted into the SGMA Hall of Fame in 2009. Fellow inductee, Duane Nicholson, shared this update on Neil.... Today is Neil Enloes birthday . He will not be able to respond because of stroke , but if you respond on my Facebook I will show him your greeting ! Physically he is doing good except for right hand movements, which are slowly being restored . He is mentally strong and is aware of everything and has total memory recall with few exceptions , but struggles with saying a sentence to completion . It frustrates him because he knows what he wants to say but he cannot verbalize. We both laughed when I told him we were starting a new language and call it Babel ! Just continue to pray . Pray for Ruth & family as well. Everyone has been careful to not overwhelm Her with calls. Remember that effects of strokes and recovery can be in small increments . Deliverance will come ! Love you all!
We are grieved to announce the passing of Ms. Doris Moody yesterday, May 4, 2020. She was 87 years old. Ms. Doris was involved with music, particularly Southern Gospel, for many years. She was the piano player for Cloverleaf Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky for 25 years and booked many quartet concerts for us. She also promoted Southern Gospel music in years past at Louisville Memorial Auditorium with her husband Roy. Prayers for the family’s strength and comfort are appreciated.
