With the annual gala behind us the museum building closed for the season, we'd like to again thank all our supporters for a fantastic first year in business. At this time, our volunteers are busy with a variety of activities, including: getting ready for this week's visit from the CP Holiday train, completing our appeals and membership renewal drives, sending out the latest AHTS newsletter, working on acquisitions of several locomotives and other equipment and items, designing the fit-out of a new space on our property to locate some of our exhibits and collections, and securing sensitive items in climate controlled storage for the winter. As always we are very much in need of additional volunteers so please consider how you can help our continued success. And, most of all, enjoy your holidays!

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train

Please join us at Alco Heritage Museum at 6:30 PM on Thursday November 29th for The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train event. It is guaranteed fun and helps benefit the fight against hunger.

The goal of the Holiday Train is to collect food and money for local food banks and to raise awareness in the fight against hunger. At each event, the Holiday Train provides a box car stage, a line up of great musical talents and a corporate contribution to the local food bank. The community, in turn, is encouraged to donate food and funds, all of which stays in the community. Items such as infant formula, canned meats, and spaghetti sauce are in popular demand.

Alco PA, Beauty Queen of Diesels

Our friends at the Hudson Berkshire Division of the National Model Railroad Association were kind enough to share this great link about the beautiful Alco PA. Please check it out, and also visit Hudson Berkshire Division's page.

Arguably the most beautiful diesel locomotive ever built, sadly no Alco PAs were originally preserved. Today, one is under restoration.

July 29 marks the anniversary of the establishment of NASA. Not many know that the massive crawlers, Hanz and Franz, are propelled by two 2750-h.p. Alco diesel engines! Each crawler weighs 2750 tons and together they form the largest self-propelled land vehicle as they move the space shuttle and launch pad (a 40-storey tall, 6300 ton payload) to one of the launch sites at 2 mph.

ALCO Heritage Museum plans grand opening

"I always thought ALCO made the best-looking, best-sounding locomotives. They were tough, rugged, simply designed, and they out-pulled their competition. They stood the test of time."

Found this gem of a quote from our AHTS President Matt Giardino in re-reading an older article from the TU - I think it really sums things up eloquently.
