From the American ambassador, a sculpture exhibit by an American artist, in Djurgarden, Stockholm, Sweden is shown to Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel.

When most people think of artifacts, they think of old fragile items housed safely in a building. However, artifacts can be the opposite! Here at Gammelgården, we have both kinds: older artifacts that the Swedish immigrants brought with them and some newer ones that recently have been added. 💙💛

One such example is the barn quilt on the back of the barn (or Ladugård). Installed on May 15, 2015, it was a project done by Olivia Nienaber, who lives in Scandia. One of 18 barn quilts that Olivia painted and installed, it features the quilted pattern titled “Old Log Cabin.”

A barn quilt is a piece of wood that has been painted, often with a quilt pattern, that is then put on barns and other buildings (although they also can be displayed on a post).

Olivia loves art and painting and was looking for a way to combine both passions. 🎨 She learned about barn quilts online and became interested in installing a trail in her community for both local residents and visitors to enjoy.

All of the barn quilts are painted with patterns from a book called “The Quiltmaker’s Gift,” which tells the story of a quiltmaker who spends her days making quilts for the poor. She never sells them and never gives them to the rich. 🚫💰The king of the land has mountains and mountains of treasures, but he is not happy. When he hears about the quiltmaker, he visits her and demands she makes him a quilt. The quilt maker refuses and says she only gives them to the poor.

Learn more about the story in our most recent Swedish Story Time where Mrs. M narrates the Quiltmaker’s Gift! https://youtu.be/wojZNWwyJ0Q Also, check it out at your local library. 📖

Since the 18 barn quilts were meant to be enjoyed by the public, Olivia asked businesses and homeowners in the towns of Scandia, Marine on St. Croix, and the Town of May if they would like to have a barn quilt. Gammelgården Museum expressed interest in wanting a barn quilt and Olivia was more than happy to gift them with one. 🇸🇪

The “Old Log Cabin” barn quilt is 7 feet by 7 feet, weighs over 100 pounds, and has 6-8 coats of exterior latex paint (depending on the color). 🔨 It is meant to last a very long time, and has become an artifact of the museum with its own story to tell!

If you would like to see it, feel free to stop by Gammelgården and see it yourself. Also, to learn more about Olivia Nienaber and her Washington County Barn Quilt Trail, visit her website here: http://www.washingtoncountybarnquilttrail.com/ .

Swedish Story Time 📖

In this edition of Story Time, Mrs. M is narrating a book called "The Quiltmaker's Gift" by Jeff Brumbeau. In it, a quiltmaker spends her time making quilts for the poor, never selling them or giving them to the rich. 🧵

However, the king wants a quilt and demands the quiltmaker gives him one! What will the quiltmaker do??

Good evening all! 🙂

As the summer comes to an end, so does my internship here at Gammelgården Museum. While the past few months have been a little different than I originally anticipated (COVID-19 to blame there), I have enjoyed single every minute of my internship. ❤️

The experiences I have had, the people I have met, and the things I have learned have all helped to make this summer amazing. ✨ At the start of May, I started doing postings on social media every week, and through researching the different topics, and reading the many comments on the posts, I have learned so so much about Swedish culture. 🇸🇪In addition, by creating the tour videos I have been able to grow my videography skills (something I did not anticipate!).

Another experience I had was working at the Scandia Farmer’s Market as a greeter. 👋🏻 It was so interesting to learn the behind-the-scenes of the market and to see what worked and didn’t work in a COVID-19 world with so many new regulations. In addition, I was able to meet so many wonderful people (both shoppers and vendors) and reconnect with people I had not seen in a long time. All in all, I feel more connected to the Scandia community than I ever have before.

I want to say a huge thank you to the staff and volunteers at Gammelgården who have been so extremely welcoming since day 1. ☺️ They have made me feel like I am a part of the museum which I appreciated a lot.

I especially wanted to thank a couple people in particular, the first of whom is Sarah Porubcansky! Being able to work with Sarah at the Market and on social media has been such a fun experience. 🙌🏻 It has allowed me to grow my overall social media skills and given me a new appreciation of all the work and dedication that goes into running the Market.

The second person I want to thank is Lynne Moratzka for all her help and guidance as I navigated my internship! 😆 She was person who first invited me to become the intern, and has always encouraged me to explore new ideas for postings and for videos. In addition, she has taught me so much about Swedish culture, and has given me a better understanding of the importance of remembering and incorporating history into our lives.

And finally, I want to thank everyone on social media for being so welcoming to me as the intern! 💞 Although I have not met many of you in person, I appreciate every like and comment you have given my postings. I also appreciate the kind works and encouragement you have given me through the summer.

Now that my internship has come to an end, I will be returning to Bethel University (they have decided to return to being fully on campus) to continue pursing a major in social work with a healthcare endorsement and minor in music. 🎶 I am so excited to be going back, and look forward to everything this year will bring.

Although this is my last posting in person, I will be scheduling a few more posts on Facebook over the next couple of weeks. I will be writing and setting up the posts this week and then they will be automatically uploaded. So please keep an eye out for them! 👁

Thank you again, and have a good rest of your summer! ☀️

Happy Friday! As this week comes to a close, I am here to share some museum updates.

First, this week’s theme is...Trees and Logging in Minnesota! 🎉🌲 A huge part of life for a Swedish immigrant family, cutting down many trees enabled them to build their first home in America. To this day, logging has impacted life along the St. Croix River, and helped shape the first communities along it.

The activities in the craft bags this week contain:
- Types of trees 🌳
- 100 years of Logging in Minnesota
- Family tree activity using tree rings
- Map of Minnesota locating cities and rivers involved in logging 🗺
- Information on lumberjacks and Paul Bunyan
- Facts about Smokey Bear and forest fire prevention 🚫🔥
- Tree napkin holder activity

A big thank you to Lynne Moratzka for putting together the bags this week! 👍🏻 All 20 of the craft bags are available in the Little Lending Library. Please limit one bag per family.

ATTENTION: We are sad to announce that this is the second to the last week that the craft bags will be offered. 😢 Intended as only a summer project, next Friday (August 21st) will be the end of the bags. We want to thank everyone for their support and interest in the bags! In next week’s bags, there will be a survey about the craft bags that we would really appreciate if you could fill out. We value any feedback you have to give!

The Devil’s Instrument (27 minutes) is a new documentary by Pioneer PBS, captured during a 10-day trip to Norway in August 2019. The film explores the culture surrounding the Hardanger fiddle and interviews woodworkers who make the fiddle, the musicians who play it and the dancers who spin to it against the backdrop of the gorgeous Norwegian landscape.
Maypoles something you see at many Scandinavian festivals. Midsummer is an occasion of large gatherings − In many cases, whole families gather to celebrate this traditional high-point of the summer. In Sweden Midsummer Eve is always a Friday between 19 and 25 June. People often begin the day by picking flowers and making wreaths to place on the maypole, which is a key component in the celebrations. Midsummer Eve in Sweden is celebrated in the countryside. Maypoles and dancing: The maypole is raised in an open spot and traditional ring-dances ensue, to the delight of the children and some of the adults. Teenagers tend to stay out of it and wait for the evening’s more riotous entertainment. So what is a maypole according to google? Maypole dance, ceremonial folk dance performed around a tall pole garlanded with greenery or flowers and often hung with ribbons that are woven into complex patterns by the dancers. Such dances are survivals of ancient dances around a living tree as part of spring rites. Typically performed on May Day (May 1), they also occur at midsummer in Scandinavia and at other festivals elsewhere. Dancing around a maypole involves a group of people taking a coloured ribbon attached to it and weaving around each other, often to music. Traditionally the dancers position themselves in pairs of boys and girls before beginning their routine. The dance creates a multi-coloured pattern which creeps steadily down the pole. The dancers then reverse their steps to undo the ribbons. This is said to represent the lengthening of the days as summer approaches, but the significance of the pole itself is not really known. The summer solstice (or estival solstice), also known as midsummer, occurs when one of the Earth's poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summer_solstice It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). For that hemisphere, the summer solstice is when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky and is the day with the longest period of daylight. Within the Arctic circle (for the northern hemisphere) or Antarctic circle (for the southern hemisphere), there is continuous daylight around the summer solstice. The summer solstice occurs during summer. This is the June solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the December solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs sometime between June 20 and June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and between December 20 and December 23 in the Southern Hemisphere. The same dates in the opposite hemisphere are referred to as the winter solstice. Since prehistory, the summer solstice has been seen as a significant time of year in many cultures, and has been marked by festivals and rituals. Traditionally, in many temperate regions (especially Europe), the summer solstice is seen as the middle of summer and referred to as "midsummer". Today, however, in some countries and calendars it is seen as the beginning of summer.

Could be great hands on idea for lodges or Norsk museums: : When I visited the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post in Central Minnesota http://www.mnhs.org/millelacs/activities/museum they had a hands on display that most of the kids appeared to enjoy building. Why not the same idea but create Norwegian bunad or belt beadwork designs. When kids lift the long board - the round pieces of wood resting the board all fall back into the cloth sack. Maybe several interchangeable board designs? I thought was a great idea for Norwegian-American museums or a lodge to copy. Edward Mike Wick
Spotted this Spark Stottingen (kick sled) at the Sons of Norway Convention on 2018 Aug 17th. Normally District 1 Face does not post commercial ads but Norwegian-Americans should be aware of kick sleds as part of our heritage and history. I wonder if there’s some where in the cities i can rent a sled to try em out. May be some lodge will have a sled day? If I was going to buy a sled I’d want a good demo and instructions in the right conditions. I’ll suggest contact Brent and Kristie Fingerson for possible ideas. Check out their web site to start with. Edward Mike Wick S/N Dist 1 FB
