Heroines of the Hudson: The untold story of 19th-century women lighthouse keepers

Saugerties had its own 19th-century heroines: Kate Crowley and her sister, Ellen.“Those gals are bricks,” said a river pilot who saw them rescue a pair of sailors from a sloop capsized in a sudden squall. “And make no mistake. You couldn’t have got any river boatmen to do what those girls di...

The winter soundscape

The ice, the wind, the snow — these are not only essential elements of our wintertime scenery but also the source and structure of the frozen soundscape. Sometimes it is worth it to peel back the parka hood or lift a fold of a wool cap to expose an ear to the cold and soak up the sounds or simply ...

A visit to the Lighthouse is an invitation to explore, relax, and unplug. Overnight guests can peruse one of the many books on lighthouses and Hudson River history; choose a board game to play together; put a record on the parlor phonograph; or sip a mug of tea on the deck. There’s a cozy nook waiting for you, too!

We need your help tracking the Chinese mitten crab! This aquatic invasive has been detected in the Hudson River where it competes with our native blue crab. Knowing how big populations are and how far they’ve spread will aid in identifying introduction pathways and potential management options. If you catch one, do NOT put it back in the water. Please take pictures, record the location’s GPS coordinates and freeze the crab. Send a report of your finding to [email protected] and DEC will be in touch to collect the specimen. It’s very quiet here in the early mornings of winter. Crackling ice and a train whistle on the east shore are the only sounds to weave through the silence covering the river.

Is the lighthouse trail open yet to the public or local community? It's been closed for many months last I heard. Do you have an update? Tx
Why is the trail closed??
What's the latest news about the trail closure? Who's dealing with the problem?
A current work in progress. Acrylic on canvas. The Saugerties Lighthouse.
My husband and I mini-mooned at Saugerties back in 2012 and were inspired to design our 1845 saltbox house decor in upstate NY after the lighthouse. As we approach our 7th anniversary next week, I thought I'd give this a try in architectural embroidery.
