Its almost International Sculpture Day - and one of our favorite sculptors is Lowell Miller. Lowell works in a hand-painted proprietary cement as well as in cast bronze. His forms feel like ancient neolithic art reimagined in the far distant future! See more of Lowell's work here: http://bit.ly/ccartsylm

The sculptor Judy Sigunick passed away yesterday surrounded by loved ones. We will miss her terribly but her wry humor and whimsy lives on in her artwork and in the hearts of those that knew her.

"Although the entire show is called “Elegies,” in conversation Young has emphasized that these works are not memorials. Instead, they are introductions to the state of being that immediately precedes existence. So they are not endpoints but beginnings. Usually we conceive of darkness as something final, but in these enigmatic works, they are introductions to the future. Thus Young mines the dichotomy between darkness and light to create art abstract and myth-like, attaining significant meaning"- Jonathan Goodman

International Sculpture Day (#ISDay) is at the end of April and to celebrate, we are featuring 3-dimensional artwork by sculptors who have exhibited in ISDAY Saugerties with Cross Contemporary Art.
Lowell Miller's metal sculpture can trace its inspiration back to ancient neolithic figures. These artworks are originally formed by hand and later cast in bronze. Miller's sculptures serve as archetypes for the modern day and present themselves as timeless votives, mythic figures and objects of worship. Wendy Klemperer specializes in forging metal into fluid, elegant gestural forms inspired by the animal world. View more of her work online:

About her sculpture, Wendy writes: "For years I have concentrated on large outdoor sculpture in a wide variety of locations: sculpture parks and gardens, city streets, on the banks of (and even in) rivers, placing natural imagery in many different settings. A lifelong study of animals informs my sculptural process; this naturalism is not the sole objective of my work, but a means to convey an expressive moment. The materials I use retain a raw, rough-edged quality, presenting the image with tactile directness. To make the sculptures I search scrap yards and construction sites for steel that has been discarded and ravaged by life in the yard. Bent and twisted, such pieces contain energy and a potential new life. The sculptures are ultimately not just about animals, but use the body language of animals to express a feeling or state of being. The driving force of the work is the dynamic line running throughout, conveying raw energy within a sinuous form to evoke a visceral response in the viewer."

International Sculpture Day sponsored by International Sculpture Center is celebrated throughout the month of April with special events, studio visits, demonstrations, and village-wide exhibitions. This April, we will also be showcasing sculptors on the internet- starting with Wendy Klemperer.
Wendy is a sculptor who has an intuitive feeling for animals- both their form and their movement. She specializes in making large, outdoor pieces out of salvaged metal however she also creates smaller studies from cast bronze and welded steel. You can view Wendy's work here:

Woodstock Public Art Project Park the Art Seeks Submissions See this link. https://woodstockpublicart.wordpress.com This project involves inscribing a large central gravel parking area with about 1.5 acres of useable space as if it were a huge black board with a drawing/diagram of the artist’s invention. The drawing will be created by using crushed white limestone chalk from a roller of the type used for sports fields. The design could consider the site, the surrounding nature, culture, and/or engagement with the public.
