Bicycle, Warm Springs, Nevada, 2015

This image was made at an abandoned ranch while on assignment for the state of Nevada, documenting various water resources. There had evidently been a fire in the main house of the ranch, and, in an effort to save the belongings, many of them had been thrown out of the house.

Over the years, the grass had grown up around these objects. This bicycle naturally caught my eye for this reason. With the grass and all the palm fronds lying there, the bike looked like it was moving. It is a favorite image of mine because of how it differs from many of the other photos in my ‘Western Abandon’ series. A large 40 x 50” version hangs in a restaurant here in Santa Fe.

Shiprock Westside, Shiprock, New Mexico, 2012

“To me, Shiprock is New Mexico. It’s the most iconic landmark in the Four Corners—a symbol of the vastness of the West.”

–Cody S. Brothers

This photograph offers a rare perspective: shot from the west side of the formation, beyond the spine, and composed vertically rather than the more typical horizontal view. Brothers emphasizes the drama of the sky, letting the clouds dominate the frame while the monolith anchors the horizon. Of the image he observed,

“Ever since I was a kid, what struck me wasn’t just the rock—it was the clouds, the horizon, the sheer scale of the land. That’s what I wanted to capture.”

Holbrook Overlook, Canyonlands National Park, Utah, 2008

I was on my first trip to Canyonlands, on an extremely overcast and sleety, snowy day, when I noticed the overlook from a distance while driving towards the campground. I decided to hike out to it, taking only my Fuji panoramic camera, loaded with Rollei R3 film, but not my tripod, because of the weather. It was about a mile and a half to get out to that cliff face.

Once I got out there, I was like, walking along the cliff face, trying to find the best spot. Ten minutes later, I found the right spot, and no sooner had I stood on it than the sun peeked out, right down onto that rim, right down on that white rim. I was then lucky enough to have the sun light up the canyon for about two or three minutes. This is one of my first photographs taken with my first panoramic camera, and the first panoramic print I ever sold.
