Paper Routes: Women to Watch 2020 | Virtual Exhibition Tour with the Curators
...
In this video, introduced by NMWA director Susan Fisher Sterling, co-curators Ginny Treanor and Orin Zahra offer a tour of "Women to Watch 2020—Paper Routes". Although the NMWA is temporarily closed, the exhibition runs through January 18, 2021.

Ranging in size from minutely detailed, small-scale works to large, sculptural installations, the sixth installment of NMWA’s "Women to Watch" exhibition series explores artists’ ability to transform paper into a surprising array of shapes and structures. The exhibition series is presented every two to three years and is a dynamic collaboration between the museum and participating outreach committees. The 22 committees participating in this exhibition worked with curators in their respective regions to create shortlists of artists working with paper. From this list, NMWA curators selected the artists whose work is on view in "Women to Watch 2020—Paper Routes".

Mira Burack was selected by the New Mexico Committee and NMWA curators to represent New Mexico. Burack reflects on beds and bedding to contemplate ideas about the subconscious and the mind at rest. She collages and layers hundreds of photographs of bedding to create the illusion of three-dimensional space. Calming, muted color palettes and perceived softness from the images of bedding create a material language that connects to her themes of sleeping and healing.

The program includes six feature films, eight Indigenous shorts, six additional films from the New Mexico Film program, as well as the IAIA Student Shorts Program.

“It’s taken several years for this program to grow to this stature, I’m really pleased with the number of Indigenous films and quality selections we have for the program this year.”—SFiFF Advisory Chair Gary Farmer (Haudenosaunee/Iroquois)

Now coming up on the twelfth annual Santa Fe Independent Film Festival October 14-18, 2020, SFiFF began in 2009 as a fringe festival that took place in a community center. By 2011, it was the largest event of its kind in New Mexico—screening over 100 films during a five-day fest. SFiFF has grown from humble beginnings to becoming one of the top annual events in New Mexico and has effectively helped extend Santa Fe’s tourism season into late October. Due to COVID-19, this year the film festival will take place at the Motorama at the Downs Santa Fe drive-in theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico with anticipated documentary premieres and narrative features. Festival goers will also be able to enjoy SFiFF from the comfort of their own homes with the Virtual Film Festival including over 30 feature films, 75 short films, and panels.
