Support SITE Santa Fe by purchasing our NEW Limited Edition Prints! 🖤

Celebrate Bel Canto with these special works by Guillermo Kuitca & Matthias Schaller.

Can you tell what inspired the first print? Last year, we commissioned Guillermo Kuitca to create this work inspired by the seating at the beloved Santa Fe Opera. He created this piece through a process involving digital manipulation of the SFO’s on-line seating plan to insert a new color palette. After printing out the altered floor plan, the artist submerged the paper in water. As Kuitca’s specially-chosen inks came in contact with water, they began to bleed allowing him to manipulate and distort the image into a semi-abstraction.

The following photographs were captured by Matthias Schaller from 2005 until 2017, as he travelled throughout Italy, photographing 150 of the country's opera houses to create a portrait of Italy through opera and architecture.

SITE is grateful to artists Guillermo Kuitca and Matthias Schaller for their collaboration on these benefit prints. All proceeds from these prints will support future artist projects and exhibitions at SITE. Please call SITE Santa Fe at 505-989-1199 for special pre-publication and member pricing & purchasing.

It's the last week to see our SITE Scholars Exhibition on view through May 26! 💀💗

Today we’re featuring art from CNM Central New Mexico Community College student Jennifer Woehrle. Through her watercolor & acrylic paintings, this #SITEscholar & Fine Art student explores the spectrum of human emotion. She often speaks through the visual medium about mental illness, something she has experienced firsthand, to normalize the conversation in the art world & beyond.

”It’s important to me that people know they aren’t the only ones struggling. I want to create a universal message that people can connect with & feel good about. I love when people interact with my paintings emotionally & connect with the feelings I’m pouring on the canvas.” Her work is cathartic & allows Jennifer to address her own struggles, which art has helped her embrace.

Skulls, the dichotomy of life & death, and black holes are repeating elements in Jennifer’s work. Dark spaces catalog her personal terrors. As a young child she feared black holes, so they are dramatically repeated in different ways to symbolize dread, anxiety, nothingness & how voids can take over.

Although there are darker motifs in her work, she approaches each painting as a problem to solve. She seeks & finds strength in her artwork, “I’m interested in depicting acts of strength in the containment & control of devastating emotions, albeit a tenuous control.” Another motif present in this series is goldleaf, a technique she is excited to have added to her repertoire.

Jennifer is especially grateful for her professor & role model Lynn Johnson, who has heavily influenced her, as well as many other artistic inspirations including Georgia O’Keeffe. The supportive community at CNM pushed her in the right direction, encouraging her to produce art she truly believes in, “I’m so lucky to have fallen into this incredible community. They’ve helped me make huge leaps in my ability, confidence & skill.”

Looking back, art has always been a part of Jennifer’s life—she’s been drawing & doodling since she could hold a pen. And looking forward, this young graduate wants to continue learning. She is thrilled with her experience in the SITE Scholar program, “It’s a cool thing that SITE Santa Fe is trying to help everyone, not just the people in universities or those pursuing their masters. All of us. It’s a great opportunity that makes me proud of myself, which is validating. I feel lucky to be counted among the other SITE scholars!”

Thanks Jennifer for sharing your story with us & we can’t wait to see where your art takes you in the future!

Enjoy this fantastic review by Anna Novakov at Artpress, which examines each artist featured in the Bel Canto: Contemporary Artists Explore Opera exhibition! 🖤

"The Bel Canto exhibition was masterfully installed with the assistance of the opera production crew – allowing the space of this New Mexico Kunsthalle to be transformed into a series of gallery-sized theaters. The inclusion of period furniture, dimmed lights and a variety of wall colors, lend the exhibition a sense of performative anticipation – with simultaneous nods to opera and contemporary art." —Anna Novakov, ArtPress
