Digest This! - SITE Santa Fe

Hue-Chan Karels, Chef-Owner of Santa Fe's Open Kitchen, sat down with us recently as part of her digital Digest This! program, Lost, Found, Reimagining. Taking us on a vivid cultural and culinary journey through Vietnamese cuisine, she shared moments of her experience as a refugee in the US, as well as her recipe for Bรกnh Cuแป‘n โ€“ the last dish she ate before fleeing Vietnam with her family.

Digest This! is generously supported by the New Mexico Council for the Humanities. The 2020 season invites local experts and innovative chefs to explore the immigrant or refugee experience through their own lives and/or the work they do in our community.

Gen-erate presents - SITE Santa Fe

Want to get some art in the mail? ๐Ÿ–ผ๐Ÿ“ฌ

For Santa Fe teen Malia Seva's Gen-erate program, she asked artists David Sloan and Hollis Moore to address themes of displacement on cards to be mailed to participants. Though these two artists came up with very different designs, both of their concepts call for a return to the earth and aim to connect participants during a period of isolation.

Learn more about Malia's program and SITE's first Gen-erate cohort, and sign up to receive your free artwork from David Sloan or Hollis Moore (while supplies last).

06/16/2020

On the night of December 29th, 1997 a recently erected monument of conquistador, Juan de Oรฑate, in Alcalde, NM mysteriously lost its foot. In its place was a note signed by "Friends of Acoma Pueblo," which forced many to re-consider the impact Oรฑate had (including acts of extreme violence) on the lives of Pueblo peoples, as well as early Spanish settlers. The removal of the foot remains a significant moment in New Mexico as an unfinished act of retribution, complicating the way history is told, who does the telling, and what becomes memorialized.

In 2017, when the status of colonial monuments came again under public scrutiny, curators Josรฉ Luis Blondet, Candice Hopkins, and Ruba Katrib were allowed access to the original foot. An exact replica reproduced in clay, along with a small selection of related materials, were displayed at SITE as part of SITElines.2018 ๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ข ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ข.

The foot made an appearance again last night, at a protest for the removal of an Oรฑate statue in Albuquerque, where violence broke out between protesters and counterprotesters, resulting in the tragic shooting of a man advocating for the statue's removal. The Oรฑate statue in Alcade, NM was removed yesterday and Mayor Tim Keller announced Albuquerque's Oรฑate statue would come down as well. The legacy of colonial violence he represents remains clearly, painfully present.

SITE invites you to #EducateYourself about the history of Juan de Oรฑate, Indigenous peoples of New Mexico, and colonized peoples around the world.

Nina Elder on meteorites

What happens when a shooting star falls to earth?

As part of artist and researcher Nina Elder's virtual tour recorded with Guide by Cell, she discusses the cultural significance of #meteorites (also known as falling or shooting stars) to Indigenous peoples around the world. What is lost when these objects are removed by scientists to be dissected, studied, and preserved?

What do you think? Can an unmodified object be a sacred object? Sound off in the comments below!

Site Santa Fe: the Displaced exhibit looks wonderful and timely. There is one issue - your statement "A displaced person is also often referred to as a refugee" needs to be corrected. I work in disaster relief and recovery internationally and a displaced person is one that remains in his/her country. A refugee is one that leaves or is forcedc pout of his/her country. Should one refer to a IDP as a refugee they are mis-communicating and wrong. Please correct this. Earl Kessler 505 983 8190 Santa Fe

Thank you for publishing photos of Andrea Fraserโ€™s installation, "2016 in Museums, Money, and Politics," which revealed SITE's board's political stance in 2016. I was astonished to discover that your board members contributed to conservative and/or Republican candidates by a ratio of nearly NINE to one. Republican lawmakers are usually on the side of cutting or even eliminating NEA funding. Republican lawmakers are normally dead-set on restricting women's choices on reproductive health and fought tooth-and-nail against marriage equality. They are against encouraging renewable energy. They obstruct action on climate change. Donald Trump has 90% approval within the GOP. Considering that Santa Fe County voted for Hillary Clinton by 71% over Donald Trump (20%), I'm astonished that SITE Santa Fe's board would be so completely opposed to the values that I believe, and numbers show, that the overwhelming portion of Santa Fe area residents generally hold dear. I had no idea. I doubt that most Santa Feans do either. But thanks for the heads-up, and for your confidence to give us the choice whether to continue to support your institution.
