Finally made it to State of the Art Gallery's December Juried Show to see my latest piece. It looks great on display! December 28 is the last day of the show, so come check it out.

"Hear on Earth" is hand carved from Verde Vermont Serpentine. I found the stone at an Airbnb on a trip to Vermont in July 2023. Vacation ended as great floods hit the state. In tribute, I attempted to capture the wind, clouds, rain, and rising floodwaters.

I recently finished and installed this minimalist water sculpture - the first of many! It's hand fabricated from reclaimed domestic granite. On top of the beauty of natural stone, the sound of bubbling water brings a sense of tranquility to the space.

Here's a favorite architectural carving from early in my career.

This antiqued Texas limestone fireplace was commissioned for a private residence in Santa Fe. I worked from a photo in the back of a magazine to make a styrofoam mockup for the client to approve. A challenge for sure, but one that turned out fantastic!

Eclipse excitement is building! While you wait for April 8, take a day trip to Clifton Springs to see the Path of Totality exhibit which includes my piece "Afterglow" and two pieces by fellow Tompkins County artist, Erika Medina.

If you can't make it in person, images and video are available at social accounts and on their website. Lots of great artists! https://mainstreetartscs.org/category/current-exhibition/

This one-of-a-kind fireplace mantel was not made by a machine and is not cast concrete. In fact, I was hired to do this job because of an inoperable CNC machine!

Using tools like an angle grinder, hammer, chisel, and basic overhead saw, I carved this fireplace mantel out of Portuguese limestone in about 78 hours. Carving in this way gives the focal point of any room a detail and authenticity that no machine can match. I hope you can see the care and effort that went into this piece.

"Transcendence," hand-carved from Indiana limestone, is an optimistic sculpture that lets light into the heaviest of places.
My work often portrays imagined landscapes from other realities; and as I sculpted this piece my brother, Danny, was on my mind. Danny died in 1996, and the upward movement of this piece echoes my belief that our souls move to a higher existence when we leave this earth. As with all my art, my hope is that it takes the viewer away from the everyday even if only for a moment.

Many of my sculptures are abstract landscapes, inspired by the shapes, colors, and light of nature. Here on a road trip between Santa Fe and Provo, my creativity was fed by breathtaking views of the incredible southwestern landscape. The journey was even more special because my daughter was with me. An artist herself, inspires me just by being her beautiful self.

I wasn't satisfied with the aesthetics of my work in progress. The piece was too bulky, and the proportions were unappealing. In a last-ditch effort to lighten it, I strategically carved three holes of progressive diameter into each side.
I've always been opposed to simplistic holes in my work, but these holes saved the piece. The empty space of the holes did three things to advance the sculpture: they cut away the bulky appearance, they added light, and they connected the two sides.
I'm still not completely satisfied, but at least it stayed out of the scrap pile...for now.

A few years ago a client gave me a photo of a celebrity fireplace that she wanted reproduced for her home. Funny thing: before too long I lost the photo and had to finish the piece from memory. But she was thrilled with the end result!
Stone is antiqued Texas limestone, and the detail closeups are before the final chisel pass.

Excited to dig into this Christmas gift! It's the first biography of David Smith, one of my sculptural heroes and one of the greatest American sculptors of all time. He changed the way we look at sculpture like Hemingway changed writing, and if he was still around I guarantee he'd tell you where to stick that CNC machine.

"An Eye For An Eye"
Locust wood from a discarded fence post. Granite from the scrap pile at a stone shop.

Sometimes I see potential in material that would normally end up in a landfill. I was really happy - and surprised - by how good the locust wood looked in the end.

Black granite fountain for private residence in Santa Fe - designed by Kevin Daniels, fabricated and installed in 2012. I hand cut hundreds of grooves at varying depths to angle the flow of water.

Because of the current drought in the desert southwest, the owner rarely operates the fountain and only at a very low flow rate.
