POP Gallery-Santa Fe (est. 2007) POP Gallery is Santa Fe's premiere New Brow Contemporary gallery, locally owned. Center among others.
(52)

Newly located one block off the plaza next to the New Mexico history Museum! Pop Gallery continues to raise the bar locally and draw established and emerging Contemporary and New Brow artists to Santa Fe from around the world. Our vision is rooted in providing art lovers with a thought provoking alternative. Rising from the underground world of tattooing and graffiti, comics, cartoons, pop art, il

lustration, and surrealist artists, the art showcased feeds of the blend of influences and energies well cemented in today's culture. In essence, Pop Gallery continues to represent a celebration of mediums and ideas, the dynamic union between independence and spirit, the emergence of sub-culture on a contemporary platform. As Santa Feans we recognize the importance of the arts and charity in our community. We partner with local literacy organizations, charities/events such as Assistance Dogs of The West, The Santa Fe Childrens Museum, Project 236, Read Across America, NM-NEA, Gerards House, Under Dog Rescue, The Adaptive Ski Program, Buckaroo Ball, Meds and Food for Kids, Bienvenidos Outreach and Southwest C.A.R.E. A portion of every sale at Pop Gallery goes directly back into our art community through charitable donations. Artist Submission Policy:
Pop Gallery is a fusion of New Brow art & POP Modern art. We do currently have a full roster of artists, but occasionally review new submissions. For consideration, please look over our site carefully and be sure that your work is compatible with our program. We will not consider artists who call or stop by the gallery. We regret that we cannot respond to every submission nor are we able to return materials without a SASE. For consideration, please email one image and link to your website to [email protected] with subject: Pop Gallery Submission.

Joel Nakamura, Dual Existence: The Juxtaposition of Dreams.

International Award winning artist Joel Nakamura is known for his unique style: a blend of folk art and sophisticated iconography rendered in a neo-primitive technique. He is chosen for many of his commissions for his knowledge of tribal art, mythology, and for his ability to convey stories and information in an intricate and engaging manner.

Nakamura’s ability to render humanity in such primal, edgy hues has captured the attention of clients like Time Magazine, US News & yWorld Report, and the Los Angeles Times. His paintings have enlivened the pages of many other books and publications, as well as the 2002 Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremonies programs. Nakamura has been profiled in Communication Arts, Step Inside Design, Confetti and Southwest Art magazines. He is proud to be the recipient of over two hundred awards of excellence.

Congrats …these beauties have found a home!

Suzy paints in a contemporary realistic style, creating paintings that portray women who are strong, women who are sensual, and women who are vulnerable. Suzy paints women from a female perspective, and style, using tongue in cheek humor, as is prevalent in Pop Art, they are evolving into a more thoughtful narrative, commenting on our current cultural climate. And of course, Barbie 💕💕💕

Happy Holidays from POP Gallery! Come visit our newest one of a kind sculpture by the incredible Don Kennel and his DKLA team! The big “Jacked” and bear , “Sate of the Union “ are both SOLD❤️Come take a fun family pic while visiting the Santa Fe plaza this holiday! ❤️

“Our latest card hood critter, “State of the Union” in downtown Santa Fe. One of the things I love about making these pieces is how improvisatory the process is. Once the form is defined the car hood panels go on one by one in a spontaneous manner, each piece finding its place and helping define the spirit and expression of the sculpture. It’s a lot of fun to be in the moment all the way through. Many thanks for modeling the body and the head and for coloration of the new steel parts.”-DK

Suzy Smith is a Wyoming native, who has lived in Albuquerque, NM, for the past 20 years. “I paint in a contemporary realistic style, creating paintings that portray women who are strong, women who are sensual, and women who are vulnerable. The subtle narrative I can create pairing symbols and design with the look and mood of my model is what drives a painting, bringing cohesiveness to the piece. I feel that they are all self portraits in some way. Whereas my paintings used to be more of a ‘Pin Up’ style, using tongue in cheek humor, as is prevalent in Pop Art, they are evolving into a more thoughtful narrative, commenting on our current cultural climate. I believe it is up to the viewer to bring their own meaning to a painting.”-SS

Another majestic bird is installed🖤🖤🖤” birds invite the past and the future, and thus constitute a kind of language. Birds bite the past because they are descendants of dinosaurs. Biologically, birds today represent that distant reptilian past. Birds also invoke the future because they are ascendant. Occupying the sky, birds come to represent the space where the future lies, just beyond our grasp. If we can attain a birds eye view, we can see more of what lies ahead.”-DKLA

New paintings on their way to POP Gallery-Santa Fe —
Looking at June's work, it is easy to see how she was inspired by the styles of artists Malcolm T. Liepke and Milt Kobayashi. When you look beyond style, Charles Bragg's satirical naughtiness and Norman Rockwell's earnest humor become evident. June filters these artistic influences through her own perspective and brings us images of women who seem both familiar and other-worldly.

There is a quiet sophistication in her portraits typically women, often summoning whimsy juxtaposed with an edge or darkness. June’s heavy stroke work and strong palettes envoke a sense of contemplation and are recognizably the work of an astute painter.

Work by June Valentine-Ruppe is available exclusively in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Contact us directly to add this prolific artist to your collection by phone 505.820.0788 or email to [email protected].

“I paint in a contemporary realistic style, creating paintings that portray women who are strong, women who are sensual, and women who are vulnerable.

I paint these women from a female perspective, and place them against a background appropriated from iconic art images, mostly Pop Art, that adds to their story; such as dollar signs, numbers, and the American flag. The subtle narrative I can create pairing symbols and design with the look and mood of my model is what drives a painting, bringing cohesiveness to the piece. I feel that they are all self portraits in some way.

As figurative art continues to evolve, in conjunction with the Pandemic, the major shift in my work has been the absence of a background. I wanted my models to stand alone with only color behind them. A reaction to the solitude we all felt during this isolating time.

My current series includes women of my favorite visual era: the 60's. I have always loved the esthetic of the time, (Pop Art era) and I think the style is once again current. I call this series the Suburban 60's.

Women of that era were expected to look a certain way, act a certain way, and always be thin and beautiful. I want them to be sensual, but I also hope to capture the vacant look behind their eyes, always with a drink and cigarette in hand."-SS

Corinne Geertsen's images are quirky visual narratives about psychological predicaments. They pull a lot of subconscious strings. The pictures are photo composites, printed with archival ink on archival photo paper in small editions. She works from my expanding library of over 20,000 images. Often she will paint something, photograph it and add it in digitally.
The pictures lean toward surrealism, as they have odd juxtapositions, non sequiturs, and an element of surprise. Geertsen's intent is to psychologically engage and delight. She sees a lot of humor and psychology in the nature of life and both inform her pictures.
The characters are usually Geertsen's family ancestors. "I'm on a constant photographic scavenger hunt, outfitting them with backdrops, sidekicks and belongings" she says. She gravitates towards pictorial elements that are symbolically loaded. Symbolism brings in associations particular to the psychology of the person viewing the picture. The pictures are completed when seen.
