Only four months after the U.S. government made him governor of New Mexico, Charles Bent was killed during the bloody Taos Revolt of 1847. At the time, he was one of the most powerful men in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands.

Friends of History invite all to join us on YouTube when David C. Beyreis reveals the history of a man and family that is remarkable for intercultural cooperation, horrific violence, and pragmatic adaptability in the face of expanding American power.

Register free at: https://rb.gy/gav39 Donations gratefully accepted.

David C. Beyreis, PhD, is Chair of Humanities and Social Sciences at Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh, North Carolina. His work on Southwest borderlands and Great Plains history has won multiple awards, including from the Historical Society of New Mexico. He is the author of Blood in the Borderlands: Conflict, Kinship, and the Bent Family, 1821-1920.

01/14/2023

Printing has played an important role in New Mexico ever since the first press arrived at the Palace of the Governors via the Santa Fe Trail in 1834. At the time New Mexico was part of Mexico and so its first imprints were in Spanish. Under the direction of Padre Antonio José Martínez, that legendary printing press brought New Mexico into a new era.
Located on the north side of the museum courtyard, The Press at the Palace of the Governors is now home to a working exhibit dedicated to preserving and promoting New Mexico’s printing and literary traditions. A visit to the shop recalls the time when each letter on a page passed through the hands of an artisan printer.
When our presses are in action, visitors are always welcome to observe and ask questions. Demonstrations of printing can be arranged by appointment, depending on schedule and other considerations.

New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) is pleased to announce the Fray Angélico Chávez History Library and Palace of the Governors Photo Archives have been awarded a $149,921 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission . The grant will fund digitization and increased public accessibility of Edgar L. Hewett’s manuscript and photographic collections.

The Edgar L. Hewett collections chronicle an expansive career through a vast number of documents and images. His work focused on the unique cultures of the Southwest, but his philosophy of cultural preservation has contributed to greater understanding and intellectual depth of the nation’s vast history. Among his many accomplishments, Hewett was at the forefront of modern Southwest archaeology where he focused attention on training a new generation of American archaeologists. He worked tirelessly for the United States Antiquities Act (1906), the first law to provide legal protection for cultural and natural resources. He led the Museum of New Mexico and the School of American Archaeology (today known as the School for Advanced Research) and preserved the cultural heritage of New Mexico. His work is still researched and referenced to this day.
