This frame will eventually become a lantern with paper sides. Like a Japanese lantern where the paper is translucent and provides nice diffuse lighting. The tesseract geometry ensures the light shines equally in all directions.

In my experience, the Artist's Statement can be a somewhat prescriptive document. It can impose limitations on the experience and interpretation of the art, and restrain the evolution of the artist and the viewer. This object is a tool for viewers of the art to engage with the art and incorporate elements of the artist's experience with their own perspective. The viewer can then generate a statement that is collaborative, yet entirely distinct and unique.

I finally completed this collection of printed stereographic 3d scenes of San Francisco. My goal was not to capture the usual tourist landmarks but to focus more on the ephemeral features of the city's landscape. Ordinary street corners and scenes that will likely look very different in the future. One of my inspirations was a talk by Rick Prelinger at a Long Now event on the changing landscape of the city and how difficult it was to find historical images that weren’t just photos of flowers, tourist spots or smiling relatives of the photographer. Maybe another one in the future as a lot of these scenes have already changed drastically!

My DIY sheet metal brake. Not pretty but it works well. The pieces shown are Tansu hardware corner pieces. There is some Tansu hardware available for purchase on the internet but in a limited range of sizes. Making these myself enabled me to get exactly the sizes I need. Next step is to work on the surface treatment.

Had fun at a beginners block printing workshop at the San Jose Museum of Art yesterday. The teacher was Dana Seeger who did a great job introducing us to the basics and offering ideas for further exploration. She and her husband run this organization which looks to be doing some great work here in San Jose. Check them out: http://www.schoolofvisualphilosophy.com/

I've always had an interest in codes and secret writing. A few years back when reading Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon that interest was reawakened and I decided to create this little encryption toy. The original had a couple of errors that have now been fixed. http://mauritaniatrading.com/Warehouse%20-%20CipherCard.html

Thieves of Baghdad

A remarkable book and much recommended. This book provides excellent insight to what "art preservation" really means. The key to saving a nation’s artistic heritage is not really about wealthy patrons, extravagant endowments, elegant buildings and carefully controlled display environments, it’s about ordinary people. The people who value and feel personally connected to art and art institutions. Because when the worst happens, it’s the people in the surrounding community who will act to rescue and preserve it. This book tells the real story about what happened to the Baghdad museum during the Iraq war. Who the real looters were, who profited, and who worked to rescue and rebuild a museum that was closed to the public for decades and served as a private treasure house for Saddam Hussein. http://www.amazon.com/Thieves-Baghdad-Matthew-Bogdanos/dp/1582346453

He's a spit-and-polish Marine, a competitive boxer, a classics scholar, and an assistant DA in Manhattan. New York tabloids call him "pit bull" for his relentless prosecution of high-profile defendants like Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs and the "baby-faced butchers" of Central Park. When Baghdad fell, ...

In 1906, Johan Heiberg, in examining a medieval Christian text discovered that the parchment pages used to create the book held faint traces of several of the works of Archimedes. The parchment text had been re-used from an earlier Byzantine copy of Archimedes. One of the works revealed was a heretofor thought lost work: The Ostomachion. While its exact function cannot be definitively stated, Reviel Netz of Stanford University theorizes that it may be an early exploration by Archimedes of the concept of “combinatorics”. This is the attempt to discover all the possible combinations of a set of shapes within limited boundaries. For the Ostamachion, that would be how many ways its 14 pieces can be arranged and still form a square. One such possible combination is expressed in a pair of screen doors. These screen doors were built to replace existing screen doors whose function was not effective at blocking insects from entering the homes. The original screen doors were made two feet shorter than the doorway so they could swing open under an exterior archway. Unfortunately, this left a large gap at the top that allowed insects to enter the residence. The Ostamachion screen doors resolve that problem by incorporating a mid-door hinge that allows them to fold closed to allow passage while not intersecting the exterior archway.

Once this symbol of the Anatolian kilim had a meaning. It was specific and clear to everyone who saw it. So familiar that it did not require explanation. What is the life span of a symbol? How many years will pass before either the crucifix or the swastika are just a puzzle for historians?

Beauty always has a sense of depth to it. Of course for me, beauty is much more than pretty. It is the implied qualities of hidden layers that will never be seen but somehow manifest themselves. As an artist who spends hours and hours building one sculpture around another, beauty evolves beyond the aesthetics of surfaces to objects that are impenetrable to vision but transparent to the imagination.
