Discovery Cube Orange County We INSPIRE and EDUCATE young minds through engaging SCIENCE-BASED programs and exhibits to create a meaningful IMPACT on the COMMUNITIES we serve.
(2940)

For over 35 years, Discovery Cube Orange County, has been a nonprofit organization that inspires and educates young minds through engaging science based programs and exhibits to create a meaningful impact on the communities they serve. Throughout the year, guests can take the Eco Challenge and become green superheros or feel the power of a simulated rocket engine launch. Traveling exhibits and annual events such as Spooky Science and Bubblefest ensure that there is always something new to discover. In 2012, the Cube was named one of the ten “Most Trusted Brands” in Orange County and in 2013 was awarded the National Medal of Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. These are challenging times for all of us but we all have a role to play in reducing the transmission of COVID-19.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends us all to "Take extra measures to put distance between yourself and other people to reduce your risk of being exposed.”

Here are 4 simple things you can do to practice healthy habits:
1) Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds
2) Clean and then disinfect frequently used surfaces
3) Avoid touching your face
4) Practice Social Distancing

Stay strong and stay informed: https://www.cdc.gov/

Could the star Betelgeuse be preparing for one of the most spectacular events in the galaxy?

Betelgeuse, located in the left arm pit of the constellation Orion, is a star classified as a Red Supergiant, measuring about 700 times the diameter of our Sun.

The red star has been going through some dramatic changes over the past year.

While its fluctuation in brightness is not uncommon, the recent dimming and apparent deformation of Betelgeuse has given rise to speculation that Betelgeuse may go supernova in the (relatively) short term future.

Supernovas are the explosive deaths of certain types of stars, like Betelgeuse.

At a distance of nearly 650 million light years away from Earth, we are safe from any ill-effects of such an event, but should it explode in our lifetimes we would be in for a good show!

A lifetime of #STEM: February 24th, 2020 marks the passing of Katherine Johnson, a brilliant mathematician whose work and pioneering efforts helped pave the way for the U.S. space program. As one of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's first African-American women scientists, her calculations provided key information for the Mercury missions, the Apollo moon landings and the development and use of the Space Shuttle.

NASA stated ,"Her calculations proved as critical to the success of the Apollo Moon landing program and the start of the Space Shuttle program, as they did to those first steps on the country's journey into space.” Katherine Johnson died at the age of 101. Thank you for your tremendous contributions to #STEM!

As 2019 wraps up, the scientific community has given us a lot to think and awe about the past 12 months. Among the science news of 2019 here are a couple of our favorites:

Imaging of Black Hole:
Black holes have long been theorized and shown mathematically to exist, but this year astronomers we able to capture the first ever image of an actual black hole. Read more: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap190411.html

Climate Awareness is on rise (and so are temperatures):
2019 may wind up being one of the hottest years on record, but with that bad news comes the good news! Climate awareness has increased and with that the hope that we are able to change our future for the better.

This awareness can be symbolized by 16 year old activist Greta Thunberg being named Time Magazine’s “Person of the Year” for her work in raising awareness for climate change.

A very special happy 377th birthday to Sir Isaac Newton; physicist, mathematician, educator, author, theologian and alchemist.

Newton influenced modern day science since he helped define the three laws of motion, mathematics through calculus and optics!

Encyclopedia Britannica states that Newton’s 1687 “Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" (Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy) “was one of the most important single works in the history of modern science.”
