Baby Back Cribs: Embroidered Carriers of the Miao

Moms are pretty great. That’s why today’s #mothersday -themed post takes a look at the baby carriers of China’s Miao minority group. Worn so often that they are widely thought of as a post-natal umbilical cord, these beautiful, intricately embroidered objects have become symbols for maternal love. To learn more about how these objects are made and used—and yet another reason why moms are incredible—follow the below link to "Baby Back Cribs: Embroidered Carriers of the Miao!"

Much Naboo About Nothing

Can you feel the midi-chlorians in the air? It’s time for the #BowersBlog to get nerdy—and not just a little bit weird—because May the Fourth (be with you) is almost upon us! This year’s Star Wars-themed post from a galaxy far, far away investigates a sculpture from Papua New Guinea’s Sepik River that vaguely resembles everyone’s favorite Gungan: Jar Jar Binks. For the usual bad puns, quick Photoshops, and a more-in-depth scoop on the Sepik figure, follow the below link to “Much Naboo About Nothing!” #starwars #maythefourthbewithyou #papuanewguinea #jarjarbinks

More than 100 of the Bowers’ tireless volunteers were feted at last night’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner in the museum’s spacious John M. Lee Court. Bowers President Peter C. Keller hosted the annual event, which honored those serving as docents and bells, and in collections, education, membership and marketing. A huge thanks to all of our loyal volunteers! I Came, I Saw Ikat: Sumbanese Hinggi

Given that the Bowers Museum had a program on #ikat textiles less than a month ago, today’s #Bowersblog post takes a look at a group of ikat textiles in our own collections. Hailing from the Indonesian island of Sumba, the four hingga men’s cloths featured are woven with warp ikat. These wonderfully colorful textiles also incorporate designs from Europe and China such as heraldry and dragons. For the details, follow the link below to “I Came, I Saw Ikat: Sumbanese Hinggi!”

#preservationweek Worried about off-gassing? 🤔 It's a common problem for archival materials! The #BowersMuseum houses #archival materials attributed to Orange County's first historian, Terry E. Stephenson. Stephenson's notebook, featured here, was interleaved and wrapped with tissue to absorb off-gassing from the clippings, then tied with twill cloth to ensure the #artifact won't stick to it.

In honor of #preservationweek, checkout this #behindthescene footage from our Collections Team. #BowersMuseum is home to over 400 textiles attributed to cultures across the globe. These #textiles are wrapped in archival tissue, rolled around tubes and suspended in storage, protecting them from their number 1 #archenemy: the crease!
