Hi all,
I bumped into the couple that won the grand prize in our Jet Blue raffle and they said in two weeks they are flying to Cancun for a vacation!

On another note if anyone has any extra Christmas lights, Bob Brouder’s daughter is looking for some because she wants to light up her yard real bright so her father will be able to see them from heaven.
We all miss him very much.
Regards,
Jon Wells

From Jon Wells the Curator.
The first replacement window is in and looks great! Many thanks to members Larry Cormier and Gregory Morissette! It’s no easy task changing out old windows and finding more to do than just pop a window out and put the new one in.

And then a couple of new guests arrived since I was here Saturday. They look fabulous and to whoever placed them here we would like to thank you very much.
I have a Conductor’s uniform if you would like to make one more.

09/21/2019

I couldn’t believe it today!
When I showed up there were people at the Depot peering in the windows and people kept coming and coming!
I had one stretch around 1230 where I got a about a 20 minute break and could sit down and relax and then bang!
Here comes some rail trail rider families for a tour and then here comes some vehicles parking and touring and it was great!
I finally got out of there around 330 instead of 2.

Busy busy at the Depot this morning!

09/10/2019

Hello all,
It was a festive and glorious weekend for SHS in White River Junction, Vermont at their annual Glory Days Festival!

The weather was perfect, children and adults were smiling ear to ear, the trains were running and the Vendors had some great food in one section and great arts and crafting in another. SHS members of the Mclure family were also there running their Live steam train and taking folks for rides.
There was also some excellent live music throughout the day with different bands rotating through ranging from Bluegrass to light rock.

We had an awesome dinner afterwards on Saturday down the street at Big Fatty’s BBQ restaurant!

Unfortunately since there wasn’t any Old home days festival in Sandown, White River Junction was a great alternative to conclude our second annual, Jet Blue 2 tickets to paradise raffle.

Upon our return on the final passenger train Sunday afternoon I rounded up 4 children to draw the the raffle winners which comprised of 8 prizes, the top prize being 2 Jet Blue airline tickets to anywhere they fly! The second prize was highly sought after which was dinner for two on the Vermont railway dinner train.

Member Steve Martel graciously accommodated us at his beautiful camp in Grafton, New Hampshire and we would like to thank him for having us.
Our deepest gratitude also goes out to the Hartford, Vermont parks and recreation department which made the festival happen along with the Vermont railway whose leader is Bob Popovac and for the last number of years Bob has rolled out the red carpet for us time after time as he did this weekend and now Bob is an official member of SHS!

We would also like to thank Jet Blue, the Conway Scenic Railroad, the Essex Valley Steam Railway, the Hobo Railroad, The Wiscasset, Waterville and FarmingtonRailway, The Seashore Trolley Museum and The Steaming Tender restaurant, all who supplied us with great prizes!

I would like to personally thank those that were able to attend and help out those that could help from afar, and finally all that supported us at the show and those that have helped SHS throughout this trying year whether it be by helping at the Depot or those who have made generous donations, those that continue to be members and the list goes on.

If anyone would like to get a membership and/or get involved please contact us at sandownnhdepot.org.

Hi all,
This weekend we will once again be on our Summer “whirlwind” tour of various historical societies!

This Saturday we are going to the Potter Place Depot Run by the Andover, NH Historical Society located on Depot road in Andover.
It is open from 10-3 and is located on the Northern railroad which ran from Concord to White River Junction, Vermont.
They have an excellent collection and display.
Their Depot was built at approximately the same time our Sandown Depot was built!

Hope to see you there.

Message from the Curator:

Hi all,
I THINK finally Spring is in the air for us all!

We have all had quite an off-season with a few fun train shows, some neat locations for our meetings, and a lot on the plate for the upcoming 2019 season.

Unfortunately, we have been delayed in our start up and here is why.

Sadly, I must report our 2 beloved Flanger cars were broken into, some damage done, some items missing and the Police wanted us to keep away and quiet while they did their investigation of the situation.

It appears it has been caused by a group of younger kids, likely local to the area.

Sadly, we had recently discovered an old picture of the locomotive called, “Sandown,” which once ran through town and we had it professionally framed and ready to present it to the Town this Spring and it is amongst the missing from the break-in.

We shall move forward and recover!

We are having a security camera system installed and we have an upcoming meeting Saturday, June 8 and plan to at least have the Depot opened on that date.

We will be setting up a GoFundMe site to help with the expense we will incur with the cleanup and restoration so any help would be much appreciated. Likewise, we are always looking for those who can lend a hand from time to time.

Here is a picture of the locomotive should anyone have any information.
Please share this with your Facebook friends etc because the Police believe this is local and not transient.

Regards,
Jonathan Wells

It was an incredible weekend at the annual train show in Springfield!
We shattered our previous records and raised over 5000 dollars!

Our new “Frey” locomotive was a stunning attraction along with the train bell and our mission!

Thanks to all who were able to help!
Eric Reuter who did a stellar job getting us set up along with a great slide show, signage etc. Danny Patterson who gave a great presentation and effort to the visitors and Jim Weber our front man who could chew the fat with anyone that came by, Andrew Plummer who traveled twice to the show and was of great help and spied a new addition to SHS (TBA), Chris Shannon who went on an emergency resupply mission Sunday for us, Bob Brouder and Anthony Loconte who rocked it for us on Saturday, Ron Rand who made 2 trips to help, Steve Labonte and I hope I didn’t miss anyone else!

Thanks to the B&M Historical Society, the Danbury Railway Museum, and countless other groups, tourist railroads and individuals along with vendors not to mention the Amherst Railway Society for making this the best Train Show EVAH for us!

Hi , looking for info on an old cast iron or cast steel B&M RR sign. The sign is approximately 7’ long x 9.5” high x 1” thick. It weighs probably 150 lbs. The lettering is raised about 3/16”. I cannot find any info or examples online. I was told this might be a boiler house sign used for large buildings or turntables. The sign was repainted many years ago, the back is unfinished. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there, several weeks ago I popped into Sandown Library as I was hoping to find some history about Sandown Bay Holiday Centre. I spoke to Louise and she gave me your details. Do you happen to have any info/pictures of the site's history at all? I'm going to be volunteering on the Chalet Owners Association website, so thought it would be good to add the info on there 🙂
In 1987, two members of the Sandown Historical Society produced a video about all things Sandown. This 90-minute video shows a lot of local scenery and shows everyday life in 1987 to future residents. It is inside the time capsule buried in June of that year under the rock in front of the Depot. The Historical Society announced that they planned to unearth the time capsule in 2037. It covers many topics including: • Sandown Central School • Fire and Police • Library • Sandown Depot • Sandown Old Meeting House • Transfer Station • Sandown Central School • Selectmen and town government • Average citizens • A lot of scenery The videographers rowed across Phillips Pond showcasing the scenery from the water. They videotaped many other locations in town, including the old Railroad hiking/biking/ATV trail. Another resident pilot produced a companion video showing Sandown from the air. There was another aerial video of Sandown in 2004.
