San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art

San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art The San Jose ICA is an energetic art space located in downtown San Jose dedicated to making contemporary art accessible and exciting to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
(80)

The ICA was founded in 1980 by a group of local artists who wanted to present cutting-edge, innovative art and experimental work in a curated space. Their goal was to get out in front of traditional museum programming and to present the newest work being created in the region. Today, we remain dedicated to that vision. The mission of the ICA is to encourage creativity by presenting and interpreting thought-provoking contemporary art to a diverse audience. We are uniquely positioned between the area’s large museums and smaller galleries, which allows us to present the work of established regional artists, while also offering exhibition opportunities for emerging and under-recognized mid-career artists. Admission is free. Donations welcomed. Each year the ICA presents 10 – 12 visual art exhibitions in our three galleries that feature drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and digital works addressing a range of subjects and themes. The ICA Lounge is a contemporary art library located at the entrance of the gallery that provides access to materials that directly complement our exhibitions and programs, including international art journals, exhibition catalogs, artists’ monographs, and multimedia education resources. The Lounge also features video interviews with exhibiting artists, as well as recorded footage of ICA workshops and discussions. Our educational programming includes Talking Art panel discussions, outstanding printed and web-based exhibition didactics, publications, free exhibition tours and excursions, as well as artist studio and gallery visits and field trips offered as exclusive membership benefits.

Alan Rath Retrospective at SJICA | Metroactive

"Rath calls the variety of whirring, clicking machines in "Virtual Unreality" sculptures. Most of them call robots to mind. Vaguely humanoid in shape, whether tall or squat, most pieces include imagery culled from the body. Enlarged neon green eyes stare at you mutely, almost reproachfully, from behind the walls of their plexiglas containers. An open mouth, divorced from its face, opens and closes on a video screen that's attached to cords and plugs and wires. It hangs on the wall like a mobile extracted from an electrician's bad dream. Five yellow hands, each on its own screen, wave at half mast to some unseen thing. And each one of them is quietly, in its own way, flickering with life."

Read the full review by Jeffrey Edalatpour in Metro this week!

With nearly 40 sculptures on display, and each one an animate object, it's surprising that the galleries aren't booming, crashing and thudding with harsh, metallic sounds. When an array of long, pink feathers mechanically opens and closes toward you like an embrace, all you hear is the easy movement...

San Jose considered one of the most underappreciated cities in America

"For one, the mystique of the Winchester Mystery House, the detail in murals across Downtown San Jose, days spent socializing at San Pedro Square, the bold installations at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and the culture."

We're so glad to contribute incredible art, installations and experiences to the residents and visitors of San Jose. And, we're so proud that after nearly 40 years, admission is still free.

Travel, food and entertainment website Thrillist recently touted San Jose as one of the most underappreciated cities in America.

#TBT Home Sweet Home (2007) was the ICA's first group exhibition in our permanent home at 560 South First St and presented artists' differing conceptions of the home. We're so excited to be celebrating 40 years of the ICA and 20 years at our home at 560 S. 1st Street in 2020!

'Figurative Fiber' Feels Oddly Familiar | Metroactive

"As she sculpts the fibers, they become more and more compact, taking the shape of whatever the artist is about to dream up. After she demonstrates the quick, repetitive motion, you can see how much effort it takes to transform strands of animal hair into obscure yet vaguely familiar shapes. In "Figurative Fiber," Metz departs from realistic representation. Again, Dedicated Meat Source is a pig, but with a ridged back like an armadillo. It's the suggestion of a pig, or a hybrid creature let loose from Dr. Moreau's island. Large Flesh & Bone #2 and Flesh & Bone Study #3 aren't creatures at all but parts of creatures."

Seventeen years ago Metz stumbled across the art of needle felting. She studied sculpture at the University of Oregon, working with traditional materials like clay and bronze. Initially, she became intrigued by the alchemy involved in wet felting. But when she went to purchase the materials to try o...

Alan Rath @ SJICA + Interview | Squarecylinder.com – Art Reviews | Art Museums | Art Gallery Listings Northern California

"Known for his meticulous attention to detail in the engineering of custom electronics for all his works, Rath pays close attention to the interplay between the technological and the organic. At one end of this continuum are the pared-down, ultra-sleek numerical counters; at the other are his most recent works: motion-activated robotic sculptures that mimic the behavior of living things. These differences may well reflect trends sweeping Silicon Valley." - by Soraya Murray Squarecylinder.com

This Wacky Installation of Household Objects Is on View Until June

A fun and insightful interview with Sofie Ramos in Architectural Digest about her ICA exhibition 'STUFF(ed)'!

"There are five speakers placed inside five different sculptures in the installation, each with its own soundtrack that acts as the voice of the sculpture it occupies. The sounds include a constant heartbeat, an alarm clock, sirens, fog horns, radio static, and human breathing. The sounds are familiar and recognizable, but spaced out and timed as if the voices are in conversation with each other. I have always thought of my sculptures and spaces as characters or imaginary friends, so sound has been a great new addition to my work to activate the objects and bring a static space to life."
