San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art

San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art The San Jose ICA is an energetic art space located in downtown San Jose dedicated to making contemporary art accessible and exciting to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
(57)

The ICA was founded in 1980 by a group of local artists who wanted to present cutting-edge, innovative art and experimental work in a curated space. Their goal was to get out in front of traditional museum programming and to present the newest work being created in the region. Today, we remain dedicated to that vision. The mission of the ICA is to encourage creativity by presenting and interpreting thought-provoking contemporary art to a diverse audience. We are uniquely positioned between the area’s large museums and smaller galleries, which allows us to present the work of established regional artists, while also offering exhibition opportunities for emerging and under-recognized mid-career artists. Admission is free. Donations welcomed. Each year the ICA presents 10 – 12 visual art exhibitions in our three galleries that feature drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and digital works addressing a range of subjects and themes. The ICA Lounge is a contemporary art library located at the entrance of the gallery that provides access to materials that directly complement our exhibitions and programs, including international art journals, exhibition catalogs, artists’ monographs, and multimedia education resources. The Lounge also features video interviews with exhibiting artists, as well as recorded footage of ICA workshops and discussions. Our educational programming includes Talking Art panel discussions, outstanding printed and web-based exhibition didactics, publications, free exhibition tours and excursions, as well as artist studio and gallery visits and field trips offered as exclusive membership benefits.

DOCS — waltonfilms

We can't wait to see this new docu series 'Process' — hosted by San Francisco-based artist Jud Bergeron Sculpture — featuring lots of talented Bay Area artists, including Tahiti Pehrson who exhibited the most incredible hand-cut paper installation in our front windows in 2014.

PROCESS is a new documentary series about what it takes to make art. After 2 1/2 years of development, we are thrilled to begin pitching the show with our production partners Left/Right TV https://www.leftright.tv and Executive Producer Norman Reedus!

Our group exhibition 'Sense of Self' is among Artforum's 'Critics Picks' — read about why this show is so great, and then come SEE why this show is so great! On view through March 15! "

"Each artist complicates expectations of objectivity and self-revelation in portraiture, whether by stepping in front of the lens or by foregrounding photography’s complicity in suggesting the veracity of images."

Featuring artists Marcela Pardo Ariza, Tammy Rae Carland, Erica Deeman, Jamil Hellu and Stephanie Syjuco. Curated by ICA Curator and Director of Public Programs Christine Koppes.

As the title of this smart group show suggests, these artists reveal aspects of themselves in their photographs, but their pictures are not simply self-portraits. Marcela Pardo Ariza and Jamil Hellu, for example, locate themselves within the group portrait. In “Hues,” 2017–, Hellu invites memb...

😮Did you know that your photos can become art at the ICA?! Yep! And you can see them at Be Art, Make Art at February First Friday!

**Before February 1 tag the ICA on Instagram or Facebook @SanJoseICA and use tag #ElectricPaintings** and your photos will be used in one of McCarthy’s projections!

Visitors will be able to walk through these large projected “paintings” which move and rework themselves into innumerable moving images continuously over time. With every visit to McCarthy’s exhibition, visitors will see a new iteration of a painting.

"Each work in the show challenges a different set of perceptual skills: distinguishing characters of text on a page, identifying objects, making sense of how the human body is positioned in space. These puzzles are laborious but irresistible: it feels as though each image is always on the verge of resolving into something recognizable. McCarthy’s work encourages a slow, insistent, tantalizing way of looking that awakens me to the skill and pleasure of everyday perception."

"Most of the work in "Electric Paintings" is built upon his own photographs. The artist applies the coding he's developed and the photograph becomes, in time, a digital painting. Painting the Internet, though, is made of approximately 10,000 images that were randomly culled from the web. The quantity of photographs now available, he says, is overwhelming. The sheer volume, thanks in part to the ubiquity of cell phone cameras, has diluted the meaning of photographs. That phenomenon interests and disturbs him."

On the left half, four workers pour fruit into a bin. None of them are as happy and carefree as that dancing orange. The right half depicts another group of four workers taking a break in the orchard. A crop duster flies in the sky above them. Linking the two halves at the center is the framed head....

Enjoy Coffee with Clive McCarthy this Friday, January 10!

"Clive McCarthy’s electronic paintings were my favorites. Large computer generated images, newly invented with each brush stroke of the pixel palette, creates a movie like assemble of an image. To mix up his generative art – art created by a computer algorithm – he will change the image sets every two weeks. You can even review his code in a separate room across from the lobby."

Thanks for the shout out, Sylvia!

2020 (40th Anniversary) – San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art

Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! 2020 is a BIG deal for the ICA, because we're turning 40! WTF! (get it?)

While 40 may seem young to many of us, it’s a major milestone in the lifespan of a mid-sized, non-profit arts organization. Four decades ago, a small band of artists decided that San Jose needed a professionally curated contemporary art space where local, national and international artists could be presented in group and solo exhibitions. And, in October 1980, they incorporated as the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art.

Fast forward to today. On the eve of our major anniversary, we are planning a year-long roster of ambitious exhibitions and compelling events that will honor our successes, reflect on our failures, and prepare for our future. Ultimately, we are not only celebrating the ICA, but also considering the importance of the visual arts in our community – honoring the hundreds of contributing artists, board members, staff and volunteers and reflecting on their impact on the Bay Area.

Check out our 2020/40 website and follow along all year for behind the scenes, memories, fun facts, and an incredible line-up of exhibitions, programs and parties.

2020 (40th Anniversary) WTF: We’re Turning Forty in 2020 In 2020, the ICA will celebrate its 40th anniversary – 40 years of presenting world-class contemporary art exhibitions in downtown San Jose. (Oh yeah, for FREE.) While 40 may seem young to many of us, it’s a major milestone in the lifesp...

**Our Best Year Yet, Thanks to You!**

2019 was a year of expansion and growth and of making new and stronger connections with our local community. Many visitors to the ICA, especially during public programs, were visiting for the first time. As the decade comes to a close and the ICA’s 40th anniversary approaches in June 2020, we’re reminiscing about the impactful exhibitions and programs this year.

Most importantly, thank YOU for your support. Every exhibition, program, experience, artist professional development program, local classroom visits and more are made entirely possible because of your contribution to the ICA. Chances are, you receive this newsletter because you’ve been a visitor, a member, a donor, a contributing artist, or just a super big fan. You are truly “friends of the ICA.”

There are so many ways you support us and we hope you’ll continue to do so into the next decade by donating, telling friends about us, writing stellar reviews on Yelp, Google or Facebook, and most importantly – attending our exhibitions and programs throughout the year. We can’t do it without you! Now, let's make 2020 even better!

Take a look at our year in review to see the fun facts that made this our best year yet!

The ICA's exhibition 'Alan Rath: Virtual Unreality' makes the top of Squarecylinder.com's "Best of 2019 list."

"Virtual Unreality, the first-ever retrospective of this pioneer of electronic, digital and robotic sculpture, examined a career that took shape in the mid-1980s, back when a technologically enabled future seemed like a good thing."

ARTICLE: Sense of Self in Review by Miranda Seaver | SJICA, San Jose, California

Thank you for the thoughtful review of 'Sense of Self' Miranda Seaver!

"In this day and age, the art of portraiture is more accessible than ever. There’s no time wasted posing for a painting or waiting for a first-generation camera to develop. Anyone can get a camera, and because of that the depth of perspectives has grown to fit the modern world. Thus is the focus in Sense of Self, where the previously silent voices of queer and POC artists have been brought into the spotlight to flourish in the public eye.

And it’s beautiful, joyous and passionate. There’s a certain hunger for representation and understanding that goes quiet after long enough, only to rush forward as soon as you find that moment of true connection."
