1038 exists in order to challenge an art-space's’ role in experiencing art today by hosting site-specific works and transient events in a residential area of the constantly gentrified city of San Francisco. Our on-site presence is limited and our aim is to have shows acclimated to the specific environment and its audience, and a web-presence that extends to an audience beyond our site. Our aim is

to provide young artists with a space that has a function and a history outside the framework of the art world. The artists’ challenge is to create work that concerns the time and place in which the space exists - and the artists’ role in it.

*1038 is founded and run by Diego Villalobos, Rene Franco and Agnes Widbom who are artists based in San Francisco and Paris.
