"OBJECTS: USA" brings artists from the landmark 1969 exhibition into dialogue with contemporary makers, featuring works by pioneering figures, including Wendell Castle, Kay Sekimachi, George Nakashima, and Art Smith, alongside contemporary makers such as the Haas Brothers, Kim Mupangilalai, Jolie Ngo, Roberto Lugo , Tanya Aguiñiga, and Nicole Cherubini. ⁠

Organized in partnership with New York gallery R & Company, this new iteration traces that lasting impact on making and material culture. More than 50 years later, "OBJECTS: USA" feels freshly charged. This expansive survey invites us to reflect on what we make, what we value, and how both have shifted over time. ⁠

“When we came back, that cube became this really beautiful mound of sand”

Some discoveries happen when you're not looking! Part two of our "Video Craft" spotlight on Megumi Naitoh (Megumi Naitoh) goes behind the material. It started with wadding, a support material her ceramicist partner uses for wood and soda firing, cast from plaster, lime, and clay.

Left alone during a vacation, one cube transformed into a mound of sand. That accidental discovery became the starting point for her “Electronic Dust” series.

The history of film is usually told through cinema’s machines and screens, but its material story also runs through the textile workshop.⁠
⁠
Join Dr. Alla Gadassik, a noted curator, author, and scholar at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, for a special conversation exploring the connections between craft and moving image.⁠
⁠
Before celluloid became the medium of analog film and animation, it was crafted from cotton cellulose and used in fashion and decorative objects. From Len Lye’s cameraless animations and hand-painted cartoon cels to works by contemporary artists featured in Video Craft, Dr. Gadassik will explore how celluloid has long moved between craft and cinema.⁠

Ahree Lee's “Bojagi (Memories to Light)”, featured in "Video Craft," draws from the bojagi — a traditional Korean textile pieced together from scraps of leftover material, often stitched by women in geometric forms as gifts for their daughters before marriage.

Lee rebuilds that gesture in video form, using home movies from Asian American families across the Bay Area, sourced through the Memories to Light archive at the Center for Asian American Media.

Like the textile it's named for, “Bojagi (Memories to Light)” is both a celebration and a tender reminder of community, memory, and representations of every-day life for Asian American families that are rarely seen in the media.

Come experience Ahree Lee's work alongside all 19 artists featured in "Video Craft." On view through August 16 at the MCD.
