👀 It's the spooky season...and some big spiders are on the move!

Autumn is tarantula migration time, after they emerge from their underground burrows.

And guess what? The Chico Creek Nature Center has three native species and another native to Arizona.

Here are some fun facts about our arachnid residents:
🕷️ Tarantulas start migrating in the fall in the Bay Area and throughout Southern California
🕷️ Male tarantulas live 5-6 years, and females live 10-30 years
🕷️ California has 10 species of tarantula in the state

🦂 Scorpions are closer than you think (and way cooler)!

California is home to 54 described scorpion species, and many of them live nowhere else on Earth. That makes our state a true hotspot for these eight-legged wonders. Closer to home, Butte County has at least three, possibly four, species, including a couple that live right in Bidwell Park. 🏞️

Here’s the part that surprises most people: venomous doesn’t mean dangerous. Of all those California species, only one has venom considered medically significant to humans.

Want to meet a few up close? The Chico Creek Nature Center cares for several scorpion species, mostly California natives, and you might even spot two of the biggest scorpion species in the world. 😮 Swing by Voices of Nature: Creepy Crawlies, where our staff dress up as their favorite Animal Ambassadors to kick off Halloween!

🌰 One more fall Nature Tots before winter session!

Bring your little one (ages 1–5) to the Chico Creek Nature Center on Saturday, Nov 7, for an hour of hands-on fun. We'll say hello to a favorite animal ambassador, share a special story, and soak up the beautiful fall weather with songs and dancing, art projects, and a walk through the park.

⏰ 9–10 AM
💰 $10 per child (one adult included)

This special Saturday session is the perfect lead-up to Halloween night.

We'll go beyond the ick factor of insects to explore their world and how they keep our ecosystem humming.

Our staff will be dressing up as their favorite Animal Ambassadors, and you can too!

Come as your favorite creature, from cute critters to creepy crawlies.

🍂 Little explorers, what are you doing this Saturday?

Nature Tots is back at the Chico Creek Nature Center on Saturday, Oct 10. This beloved program offers kids ages 1–5 a chance to experience nature the way a kid should: with curiosity and fun! Kids and their grown-up will enjoy an hour of animal visits, story time, singing and dancing, an art project, and a nature walk through the park.

🙌🍁 Welcome to fall, y'all! Today is the autumnal equinox. 🙌🍁

Happening at 8:04 PM in Chico, this event marks the start of the new season.

Today, day and night are nearly equal in length.

But starting tomorrow, the days will continue to get shorter, and the nights will continue to get longer.

This also acts as a biological alarm clock for animals to shift their routines and prepare for winter.
