Here’s a tribute to Jay Adams adapted from a classic photo by Glen E. Friedman at the legendary dog bowl. It is impossible to overstate how much influence these guys had on society while being looked upon as delinquents. My deepest thanks to all involved.

The old masters used a technique called underpainting working out the entire composition in earth tones, then using light translucent layers of paint over it, building depth and dimension. This is my underpainting of Titus Kinimaka surfing in the 1974 Smirnoff Pro at Sunset Beach from a classic photo by Dan Merkel. Respect. This captures everything I love about surfing as a metaphor for life. Sometimes the best you can do is pick a direction, put your head down and go!

“The Saint” was an early Martin Potter trademark like all the early eighties pros seemed to have. Not that he needed one, the airs, savage power, and all around speed and spontaneity in his surfing were enough. A lot of people doubted whether aerial surfing was even surfing at all, probably because they couldn’t do airs. Nowadays you can’t really be a professional surfer without them. Some people will always be ahead of their time.

Andy Irons from a classic photo by Brian Bielmann. What I love about this painting is it has zero polish. Even the trees have only hints of detail and nothing is actually rendered so that up close it is just a messy smear but when you pull back it comes into focus. Also I found I painted him less high than in the real photo because it just looked fake! Usually artistic license would make me exaggerate not the other way around.
