Celebration of Motherhood - Gelede Mask. The Yoruba people of Nigeria have many masking organizations whose responsibility is to venerate deities and serve as the regulating body within particular communities. The Gelede masquerade pays tribute to the female deity that represents femininity and motherhood. The deity of femininity and motherhood goes by many names in different Yoruba communities – Iya Nla, Aje, Yemoja, Iyami as well as others. The first women said to perform the Gelede was Yewejabe. Currently only men wear the mask however they represent the female deity. The Gelede female deity controls fertility, life, the death of children, peace and happiness.

We are changing our name! Due to generous donations from several local collectors, the African Art Collection is now the World Cultures Collection. The Mesa College Foundation would like to thank Dr. John Ross, Dr. Richard Ulevitch and Dr. Arvin Klein for their generous donations. The expansion of the collection includes pieces from India, MesoAmerica and the Pacific. The students of San Diego Mesa College are extremely fortunate to have access to these significant pieces of cultural history.

(If you would like to donate to future exhibitions and the preservation of the collection you can make a tax deductible donation to the Mesa College Foundation: scroll to the bottom of the page and click on African Art drop down link: http://www.sdmesa.edu/about-mesa/mesa-foundation/)

Congratulations Andrea Chung on your solo exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego!

Andrea was one of three African American artists featured at Mesa College Art Gallery's exhibition Impressions: African American Artists and their Connection to African Art, co-curated by Denise Rogers and Alessandra Moctezuma.

We hope everyone will make it out to see You Broke The Ocean in Half To Be Here. It is important work, and it matters that this is the first solo exhibition of works by a black woman at MCASD. Way to go Andrea!

I want to give a special congratulations and thank you to a wonderful student, assistant, and friend Chelsea Rosen. Chelsea has been working with the African Art Collection for the past 3 years. We have been through so much together; cataloging, exhibition display, mishaps, discoveries and celebrations. She has taken visitors through our storage area, noting the significance of particular pieces. Her love and appreciation for the collection shines through. She has been an amazing support and I have watched her grow as a student, overcome many obstacles and achieve success. She is transferring to SDSU in the fall, majoring in American Sign Language (and possibly a minor in Art). I was so fortunate to be a part of her journey and I am going to miss her smile, her support and amazing energy. Wishing her all the best!
