The Park is home to 15 major museums, several performing arts venues, lovely gardens and many other cultural and recreational attractions–including the San Diego Zoo. Step into the beauty of 1,200 lushly planted acres, explore the attractions, enjoy the views, and you will see why Balboa Park–the nation’s largest urban cultural park–is ranked as one of the Best Parks in the World. Many of the cultural institutions, as well as much of the stunning architecture and landscaping in the Park, are the legacy of two Expositions. The 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition commemorated the opening of the Panama Canal and provided a major impetus for the creation of the Park as it appears today. Balboa Park’s famous El Prado pedestrian walkway features highly ornamented Spanish-Renaissance style buildings constructed for this Exposition. The 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition, held to boost the local economy during the depression, added more cultural organizations, structures and landscaping. The buildings around the Pan American Plaza at the southern end of the Park present a fascinating architectural history of the Southwest. To help you plan your visit, a snapshot description of the major attractions in the Park follows. Enjoy discovering the excitement and beauty of Balboa Park!

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, we would like to celebrate an icon of Balboa Park.

Walking from Sixth avenue towards Balboa Park you'll come across a bronze statue created by Ruth Hayward of horticulturist Kate Sessions, often referred to as the "Mother of Balboa Park".

During her lifetime, Sessions planted thousands of trees, vines, shrubs, and succulents that not only graced #BalboaPark but also through the city of San Diego.

It's important to remember and talk about Kate Sessions as an instrumental figure in the development and beautification of Balboa Park.🌳

Today, the bronze statue honoring #KateSessions stands among some of the trees that she planted including Matilija Poppy, Indian Hawthorne, Lily of the Nile, and Hong Kong Orchid trees.

Did you know the benches surrounding the Moreton Bay Fig Tree utilize wood from felled trees in Balboa Park? ♻️ The benches were fabricated by our friends at San Diego Urban Timber to pay homage to how all trees in the park can be beautiful. 🌳 Don't these benches look like stunning sculptures?! #MoretonBayFig #BalboaPark #Sustainability

Balboa Park Cultural Partnership

Wonderful news for Balboa Park! 🌳🌱✨

San Diego’s famous Balboa Park has achieved a LEED for Cities and Communities certification. The certification of #BalboaPark marks the first time a cultural district and historic landmark has achieved such a designation. The park joins a network of more than 115 #LEED-certified cities and communities worldwide!

The achievement is the culmination of more than a decade of collaboration between the City of San Diego, nonprofit venues in Balboa Park, and partners such as San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) that led to several major improvements including reduced energy use, water conservation, and waste diversion park-wide. The effect of these efforts is long-lasting improvements that not only support the city’s climate action goals but also improve the quality of life for all San Diegans.

In addition to the Ford Building (now home to the San Diego Air & Space Museum), the #FordMotorCompany sponsored the #FordBowl, an open-air amphitheater at the south end of the Palisades. Both structures are designed in the Streamline Moderne style to reflect the latest architectural trends of the time (1935).

The Ford Bowl featured an open-air amphitheater with bench seating for an audience of over 3,000. During the Exposition, the Bowl was the venue for a wide variety of musical performances, including choirs and symphonies. The structure later became known as the #StarlightBowl. ✨

Looking forward to seeing all of you next year!
Since not everyone has a car, I guess the rest of us can just go to hell if we wanted to attend December Night. It's not a county order that this event can only take place as a drive-thru is it? If so, the planner should have just cancelled it. This is discrimination.
Welcome! See the NEW holiday events calendar! www.VaccaroHomesearch.com MERRY CHRISTMAS!
is Balboa park decorated for Christmas? (other than the Old Globe)
the 2020 December nights that will happen should be cancelled this year do to a lot of people that go ride the city bus to get there. it is it dum to of a test of event in a car that makes a lot of people mad they can't go there is no freebies and i can see that event will suck. :(
I have been wanting to do a project with my Grandfather's pictures of Balboa Park for years...Since there could not have been a prettier day at Balboa Park than this past weekend, I ran out of excuses. I hope you enjoy.
Dear Balboa Park, With no December Nights and no Grinch at The Old Globe... Please bring a ice skating rink to the park this holiday season. Thank you 😊 😉
