‘Beginnings, Forever: From the Collection of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts / Shinnyo-en’ Review: Through the Lens of Youth

The Wall Street Journal visited the Museum of Photographic Arts at Balboa Park!

A few weeks back, WSJ walked the galleries to see MOPA's reopening exhibition “Beginnings, Forever.”

With the new show, MOPA is celebrating the creative nature of young talent. Every artwork in the show was made before the artist was 35 years old. 😲

Check out the review, and we hope to see you at MOPA's galleries soon!

San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts exhibits a potpourri of pieces from its Japanese sister institution, which emphasizes work created by photographers younger than 35.

Hundreds of Kids Record Original "(You Are) Amazing," Send Message of Hope and Encouragement

On Sunday, May 16th the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory and Music Education Non-Profits from San Diego and Tijuana collaborated to send an “amazing” message to celebrate music education and to send a message to our young people that “(You Are) Amazing”. ❤

Unable to have a live performance of a newly-commissioned work by nationally-acclaimed composer Brian Balmages, SDYS invited music students from across the region to share their commitment and dedication to their craft while amplifying the message of Balmages’ powerful story of redemption and renewal in the face of a global pandemic. Often staged in media or presented in an inauthentic form, Indigenous people have long endured misrepresentations of their culture in art, advertising, photography, film, and television.

Shaped by years of study, artist Cara Romero represents Indigenous and non-Indigenous lived experiences in her art form. In her series "First American Girls," for example, Romero reimagines a world where Indigenous beauty is celebrated and its diversity is acknowledged. She creates these life-size, tribally specific doll boxes in collaboration with her friends and family.

Next week, Romero joins artists Nitashia Johnson and Morgan DeLuna at the online event Culture&Cause, where the three will share process and activism in their work.

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, we would like to celebrate an icon of Balboa Park.

Walking from Sixth avenue towards Balboa Park you'll come across a bronze statue created by Ruth Hayward of horticulturist Kate Sessions, often referred to as the "Mother of Balboa Park".

During her lifetime, Sessions planted thousands of trees, vines, shrubs, and succulents that not only graced #BalboaPark but also through the city of San Diego.

It's important to remember and talk about Kate Sessions as an instrumental figure in the development and beautification of Balboa Park.🌳

Today, the bronze statue honoring #KateSessions stands among some of the trees that she planted including Matilija Poppy, Indian Hawthorne, Lily of the Nile, and Hong Kong Orchid trees.

In 1926, the Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego officially opened its doors, making the San Diego Museum of Art the region's oldest and largest art museum!

Take look at the beautiful construction by Friends of Balboa Park to build a viewing platform that would once again share an up-close view of this century-old Moreton Bay Fig Tree! 🌳

Did you know the benches surrounding the Moreton Bay Fig Tree utilize wood from felled trees in Balboa Park? ♻️ The benches were fabricated by our friends at San Diego Urban Timber to pay homage to how all trees in the park can be beautiful. 🌳 Don't these benches look like stunning sculptures?! #MoretonBayFig #BalboaPark #Sustainability

Can somebody tell me if the street vendors are there during the week or only on the weekend? I was there last weekend before going to Tijuana and I have regrets Of not purchasing some beautiful handmade earrings of Frida Kahlo and I would Love to get a Huipil before going back to Wisconsin
Every morning between 6-8 A. M. I've seen workers from the 525 Olive site deliberately making a left turn on Balboa Drive from El Prado despite the fact that it a one way street and despite the fact there are two large signs that say Do Not Enter Wrong Way in their attempt to look for parking. This is a tragedy waiting to happen. I feel the Balboa Park Association needs to address this with JR Concrete, Dynalectric, etc regarding this dangerous behavior by their employees.

Looking forward to seeing all of you next year!
Since not everyone has a car, I guess the rest of us can just go to hell if we wanted to attend December Night. It's not a county order that this event can only take place as a drive-thru is it? If so, the planner should have just cancelled it. This is discrimination.
