Balboa Park

Balboa Park Balboa Park is a San Diego must-see, just minutes from downtown, and ranked as one of the Best Parks in the World.

Balboa Park is a San Diego must-see, just minutes from downtown. The Park is home to 15 major museums, several performing arts venues, lovely gardens and many other cultural and recreational attractions–including the San Diego Zoo. Step into the beauty of 1,200 lushly planted acres, explore the attractions, enjoy the views, and you will see why Balboa Park–the nation’s largest urban cultural park–

is ranked as one of the Best Parks in the World. Many of the cultural institutions, as well as much of the stunning architecture and landscaping in the Park, are the legacy of two Expositions. The 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition commemorated the opening of the Panama Canal and provided a major impetus for the creation of the Park as it appears today. Balboa Park’s famous El Prado pedestrian walkway features highly ornamented Spanish-Renaissance style buildings constructed for this Exposition. The 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition, held to boost the local economy during the depression, added more cultural organizations, structures and landscaping. The buildings around the Pan American Plaza at the southern end of the Park present a fascinating architectural history of the Southwest. To help you plan your visit, a snapshot description of the major attractions in the Park follows. Enjoy discovering the excitement and beauty of Balboa Park!

This new exhibit at SDMA is lookin' sharp! Justin Sterling's "Chapel of the Rocks" is an approximately 1000-square-foot structure, suffused with light refracted through numerous stained-glass windows, which the artist has shattered with rocks and then rebuilt in new ways. Be immersed in a beautiful space constructed of unconventional materials that provokes contemplation of the role of faith in society.

State Cultural District Tour

It is a true honor for the cultural core of Balboa Park to be designated 1 of 14 official California Cultural Districts. And we had a great time showing our state, regional, and local representatives and their teams around our beloved Cultural District this week! Their visit was packed with first-hand experiences that shared the vital role that our Balboa Park Cultural District plays in creating community partnerships, enhancing identity and pride, fostering arts education opportunities, and supporting economic development. 🌳 We are also grateful for the collaboration with the other cultural districts across California, and look forward to more districts joining the list in the near future.

If you would like to take your very own tour of the park's cultural district, get started at the Visitors Center in the House of Hospitality!

Wondering how you can “travel” without actually taking that Christmas break trip?

For many families, the staggering cost of inflation, soaring airline, gas & grocery prices, the energy crises due to Ukraine crippling Europe, and universal economic strain, it just doesn’t make sense to take a travel right now.

That’s why we’ve complied some ideas to ignite our wanderlust while keeping it close to home this holiday season. We’re using San Diego as a case study!

Read about being a traveler in our own town like re-visiting Birch Aquarium at Scripps & Balboa Park, exploring cultural corners like Barrio Logan, garden collectives like Coastal Roots Farm, traveling virtually through Old Town San Diego and getting out into nature in Joshua Tree National Park as alternative ways to explore our world all while staying local.
