The new Palisades Plaza was officially unveiled today at a press conference by Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Mayor-Elect Todd Gloria, Councilmember Chris Ward and other City leaders. This project brings a more pedestrian friendly vibe to the south end of Balboa Park. With new landscaping, lighting, a safer tram stop, and added seating and tables, it it a perfect place to take a break and watch the planes fly overhead. Thank you to the City of San Diego for making this wonderful improvement possible!

Since 2008, the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership has administered the #BalboaParkSustainabilityProgram. And by collaborating with a long list of partners over the past 12 years, the accomplishments have been impressive!

The program in its current form is winding down at the end of 2020, leaving the park and the staff in its various nonprofit organizations in a much greener place than when it started.

⁣This Indigenous People's Day, the Museum highlights the work of Fritz Scholder, currently on view in the exhibition "Questions of Identity."⠀

Scholder’s images are often rooted in stereotypes, but through his use of vivid colors or contemporary objects, he challenges the viewer’s visual understanding of indigenous peoples and the clichéd narratives established by earlier artists.⠀

“I am a non-Indian Indian,” Fritz Scholder asserted. “I do not feel the pull of the dichotomy of two cultures. However, I am aware of the incongruous nature of the two cultures.” Scholder is one-quarter Luiseño, a California Mission tribe. While Scholder maintained that his one-quarter Luiseño heritage did not define him, his depictions of Native Americans contrast starkly with those of non-Native artists who perpetuated romanticized stereotypes of indigenous peoples. Indeed, this was Scholder’s goal. He wanted to draw attention to the “schmaltzy” representations that saturated all facets of visual culture and in doing so, force viewers to question preconceived notions of Native Americans.⠀

Catch these works and others seeking to capture the largely intangible American identity in the exhibition "Questions of Identity" in Gallery 6 on the first floor. ⠀
