Coming soon to the Mingei International Museum! “25 Million Stitches” is an epic project lead by guest curator and fiber artist Jennifer Kim Sohn.

This exhibition seeks “to make the unfathomable figure of refugees around our world more tangible by marking a displaced person with panels of hand-sewn stitches…Each panel is unique, some documenting personal narratives, others showing solidarity with the refugees. Sohn and her passionate team of volunteers crowd-sourced 2,300 stitchers from all 50 states and 37 countries worldwide.”

See “25 Million Stitches” with your Balboa Park Explorer Pass when it opens this Saturday, March 25th. For more info about the Balboa Park Explorer Pass, visit buymyexplorer.org. 🪡

Throwback Thursday! Back in the day, the Balboa Park Club coffee shop and soda fountain was a great place to grab a quick snack and refreshment. Especially when you could get a hamburger and coffee for 60 cents! “It was first constructed for the 1915-16 Panama California Exposition to house the State of New Mexico's exhibits. It was later remodeled and enlarged for the 1935 exposition…It was renovated again in the 1990s.” - SD City Clerk Archives

What's your fondest Spreckels Organ Pavilion memory? The Spreckels Organ is a symphonic concert organ with stops that create illusions of brass, reeds, strings, percussion and other orchestral instruments not found on traditional church organs. It was built as a permanent structure at the 1915 Panama-California exposition, donated by brothers John and Adolph Spreckels – wealthy heirs of a sugar magnate.

Enjoy an organ concert at Spreckels every Sunday afternoon, and be on the lookout for upcoming entertainment hosted by the Spreckels Organ Society! 🎶

This is Our Story at the Mingei International Museum

Welcome to "This Is Our Story: American Vernacular Art from the Kaplan Collection" at the Mingei International Museum. "'This Is Our Story' features works by self-taught artists from various parts of the United States, with different levels of education and ethnic/cultural backgrounds. What all the artists have in common is that none of them practiced their creativity in the context of the academic art world. Instead, they created their work for personal use or for their families, for self-expression, self-representation, and to participate in the joy of making. Each work of art is deeply personal and invites us to connect to another human being and contemplate another’s story."

"This Is Our Story" is on view at Mingei International Museum until February 26. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Sunday from 10 AM - 5 PM (until 8 PM on Thursday & Friday). Admission to Mingei in included with the Balboa Park Explorer Pass. For more info, visit explorer.balboapark.org

Back in 1915, the California Building was the home of the Expo's theme exhibit, an anthropological display called 'The Story of Man through the Ages.' If it seems familiar, that's because the California Building now hosts the Museum of Us! Their current exhibit in the rotunda, "Maya Peoples: Heart Of Sky, Heart Of Earth", features the same structures amongst expanded history and information about Maya culture that was developed in collaboration with Maya community consultants.

The room pictured here is located directly east of the current Visitors Center in the House of Hospitality, leased for $1 per day in 1950 as the Park's new "Information Center". This photo from 1963 showcases the information booth on the left and display cases with Balboa Park historical photography and artifacts on the right.

Another great week in the life of a Herstorian. Our drone fleet arrived on Wednesday. 🚀 We unboxed, charged, labeled and registered them hoping to fly today, the rain caused a change in plans. Instead, we went to the .

Highlights include the This Is Our Story exhibit. The words around the mirror are a reflection of the faces in the mirror. "Windows offer a glance into the perspectives and stories of others. Mirrors allow us to see ourselves and our identities reflected in stories from others." 💫

The beaded earth in the African Bead exhibit is a must see! Beads are a major component of the cultural heritage of Africa. 🌍

The design library was visual euphoria! We will definitely be back! 📚

On to the crowning glory...the Fold - Twist - Tie exhibit featuring hats made of paper bags by moses. Check us out in our moses-inspired creations! After taking the first group hat pic, I encouraged the Herstorians to unapologetically take up space. This image is their interpretation. Now that's ART! 👒

The last pic is the cherry on top. Makenna wanted to commemorate our visit with a gift, so she bought everyone a worry doll from the gift shop. In the dolls original Guatemalan tradition, a local legend about the origin of the Muñeca quitapena refers to a Maya princess named Ixmucane. The princess received a special gift from the sun god which would allow her to solve any problem a human could worry about." (Joiner, Rücke, 2010) Rather than sleep with it beneath my pillow, I will carry mine in my OGL neck wallet to remind me NOT to worry about how and just do! 🎯

By group poll, we gave this museum a 9 out of 10 stars. We throroughly enjoyed ourselves and making plans to come back during San Diego Design Week to learn more about design and expand our list of partners in the fields of design and architecture to make We The People Museum EVERYTHING we are imagining. 🦅

Thank you again to County of San Diego - Government, Modus AI, and HR Benefits Services for your support of our program and Explore Balboa Park for annual museum passes to Balboa Park museums.

📸 :👋🏾 and Monèt Nyree

A few Herstorians and I spent Sunday at the Museum of Us as part of our ongoing market research for our virtual We The People Museum. As a whole we appreciated the intentionality and inclusivity of the exhibits and the functionality of the layout. As a group, we give this museum a 9 out of 10 stars. One of our highest rankings to date.

The Hostile Terrain 94 exhibit was especially powerful in how it showed the impact on human life by displaying the toe tags of those who have lost their lives in the Sonoran desert between Mexico and Arizona. The orange toe tags are unidentified people. It was a powerful exhibit that will spark ideas on how to share the impact of the areas we will be creating exhibits for in our museum.

The Race; Are We So Different exhibit was very informative. We learned that Sickle Cell is geographical not race based! Even got to share a bit about reclassification and the census.

Thank you to Explore Balboa Parkfor your generous donation of annual passes to visit Balboa Park's Museums.
