Google earth, mapping technologies, satellite imaging, GPS systems, NASA imagery, and other similar devices are all sources of orientation in space which allow us to locate ourselves virtually anywhere. However, when we bring our personal histories to any given location, we alter its existence at once. Reality is only ‘real’ inasmuch as it is unaffected by the interpreting individual, inasmuch as it exists outside the person who comes in touch with it.

In the Outside-In project the four artists question reality and the visible world by analyzing the notion of location and temporality by attempting to recreate the outside reality of the JETT gallery location inside the gallery space. The result is an obvious alteration of the physical real through the prism of each individual artist. Reality is never really objective. Our worlds, whether imagined or externalized, affect the physical world we come in contact with. Reality is a mere extension of our inner beings, a prosthetic that aids us in our daily existence. Any given address consists of locative points of the physical real spliced with the ‘intruding’ individuals who inhabit it. The result is potent with possibilities, stories, new beginnings and creative powers that have given the impetus for the Outside-In installation.

I am now happy in the suffering I endure for you.Saint Paul (epistles)Power and submission, control and dominance, pain and transcendence--these are the themes that resonate in these images of people in bondage paraphernalia. As Western culture moves away from a community of shared beliefs and organized religions, to a more antiseptic global society something is lost. What is removed is the sense of belonging, reflected in the loss of rituals. We no longer have the clearly defined rights of passage that provide initiation into a shared belief system. For some, bondage becomes a new community and a framework for a new belief system. The works from Equal=Secret Identities trace their origins to religious iconography, societal subcultures and the relationship between photographer and subject. Photography has always had the power to reveal our hidden selves. In these portraits by Josue Castro, the sitter’s identity may be physically hidden from us, but a greater secret is revealed. Given the opportunity to choose from a selection of bondage gear each person makes his or her individual statement. Opening us to a lifestyle with its own rules and defined roles, these images force us to confront the true meaning of bondage, with its darker side of interpersonal relationships and the transforming benefits of pain. In all of Castro’s work his sensitivities are with culturally charged imagery and indigenous protocols. His artwork is thoughtful and intelligent, the result of his careful research and his openness to exploring challenging ideas.
