Hellenic Cultural Society of San Diego

Hellenic Cultural Society of San Diego The Hellenic Cultural Society of San Diego has been an organization that promotes Hellenism for over 50 years and has been instrumental in helping to establish three Greek Chairs at the University of California San Diego....

The Hellenic Cultural Society of San Diego was established in 1964 to promote, educate and rekindle enthusiasm and pride of Hellenic heritage. Since the inception of our organization we have established free lectures from well known scholars, children's programs for local schools, and co-sponsored, with the Greek Community, three Greek history chairs at the University of California San Diego. We have also created a substantial library that was recently donated to the Geisel library and UCSD. During the summer months we host movie nights, showing movies that not only reflect the history of Greece but also the beauty of it. Our Hellenic Ball was first held in October 1966 under the chairmanship of Steve Aposperis. Since then the ball is held every four years coinciding with the Summer Olympics. This ball with be held on Saturday, October 20th, commemorating the 30th Olympiad of the modern era. Located in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines hotel, with the theme of 'On the Wings of Knowledge'. We will celebrate the triumph of knowledge regarding Greek History. All donations are tax deductible and it is a wonderful event to attend. Starting this year, to gain a younger crowd, we are hosting a Chiton Party (Greek Toga) and Casino Night, featuring San Diego's own, DJ WIRED. . . dance to the sounds of house music while participating in casino fun, cash prizes for the the best toga costume and casino pots. For more information on both events, please go to our website, www.hellenic-cultural.org

Macedonia name dispute: PMs watch as ministers sign 'historic' dea
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev on 17 June 2018
Image caption Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras (right) met Zoran Zaev near the border between the two countries
Greece and Macedonia have signed a deal that aims to settle a decades-long dispute over Macedonia's name.

Under the agreement, Greece's neighbour will be known as North Macedonia.

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras said it was "a brave, historic and necessary step for our peoples".

Heated rows over Macedonia's name have been going on since the break-up of the former Yugoslavia, of which it was a part, and have held up Macedonia's entry to Nato and the EU.

Greece has long argued that by using the name Macedonia, its neighbour was implying it had a claim on the northern Greek province also called Macedonia.

Full story: What's the name row about?
The man who has focused on one word for 23 years
The two countries' leaders announced the deal on Tuesday and have pressed ahead despite protests.

Mr Tsipras and his Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev watched as their foreign ministers signed the deal on Lake Prespa on Greece's northern border on Sunday.

The agreement still needs to be approved by both parliaments and by a referendum in Macedonia.

Nationalists on both sides say it erodes their identity.

On Saturday Mr Tsipras survived a no-confidence vote over the deal amid accusations he made too many concessions.

Friends of the Classics at San Diego State invite you to attend Bliss...based on Greek Mythology...

Housewives are dutiful. Husbands are brawny. It’s 1960 and Emily Post’s guide to etiquette is keeping America “great.” But in a delicious turn of events, a stranger materializes who might end life as the citizens of North Orange know it. This audacious Joint World Premiere reimagines the tragic heroines of Greek Mythology as pill-popping housewives in a cautionary tale with deadly consequences...
