Although companies use the term "self-publishing," it's misleading. If you sign up with them you are NOT self-publishing. They are what's called subsidy or vanity presses in the industry. Subsidy presses have been spending (and continue to spend) a lot of money to transform the term self-publishing into something it is not.

It is recommended that writers buy their own ISBN--and create their own publishing houses.If you have market aspirations for your book, buy your own ISBN (International Standard Book Number) and create your own publishing company. Paying to publish and publishing through your own company are two different things.

Even if you go with Lulu, BookSurge, CreateSpace, iUniverse, Author House, etc. there's no reason to have them listed as your publisher.
