Mission San Diego de Alcala

Mission San Diego de Alcala San Diego de Alcalá, the first of the twenty-one great California Missions, marks the birthplace of Christianity in the west coast of the United States.
(395)

It is California's first Mission Church. This remarkable and significant historical shrine provides an understanding and appreciation of the beginning of Catholicism in this corner of the world, so remote from the Mother Country of Spain and yet so similar. Today the Mission, which was founded in 1769, serves as an active parish church and cultural center for people of all faiths who are welcome to visit and relive the grandeur and excitement of more than two centuries of California history and tradition.

Peter Lawrence enjoys a piece of his "No Leches" Cake.

Linda Lawrence explains, "I cut the recipe in half and probably shouldn't have waited to poke the holes in the top before pouring the milk mixture. It all just sat on top of it and overflowed all of the place. It never sunk in to the cake so we called it No Leches. It was pretty good though."

Post of thanks from our new Associate Pastor Fr. Raymond Philip Napuli. Yesterday was his birthday! Happy birthday Father.

Thank you all for the Happy Birthday greetings! Life is precious and a gift worth celebrating.
Also, 4 months of the priesthood to the day, Laus Deo!

I haven't been on social media much at all - but I just want to update you that I am enjoying the ministry at Mission San Diego.
I love getting to serve this fantastic community. It's also a delightful honor to be with Fr. Peter and Fr. Bill following after St. Junipero Serra as (literally) a San Diego Padre.

God Bless you and please feel free to stay in touch via

Pope Francis has prayer intentions each month of the year, this month, August 2020, his intention is for the Maritime World.
We pray for all those who work and live from the sea, among them sailors, fishermen and their families. Lord, hear our prayer.

On Monday, July 13, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the closure of indoor operations in various sectors of our community which includes HOUSES OF WORSHIP. This went into effect at midnight, July 14.

Due to that announcement, Fr. Peter Escalante, our pastor, moved to continue our celebration of the Mass outdoors in the Mission Courtyard. The schedule has also changed; Saturday, (Sunday Vigil) will be at 5:30pm only (no 4pm Mass). Sunday's schedule will be 7:30am and 9:00am Mass in English; Sunday 10:30am will be in Spanish. Facial coverings or masks are required; 6ft social distancing will be observed at all times between individuals and/or households. Shady spots will be limited so bring a hat covering/umbrella/sun screen. We will continue to be available each week.

Repost of Crystal Carr - I attended mass today because I was hired to photograph a couple of beautiful little kiddos receiving their first communion. Our new priest at the Mission, Fr. Raymond Phillip, shared an excellent homily relating the gospel reading to current times. Today’s gospel:

MATTHEW 8:23-27
23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, "Save, Lord; we are perishing." 26 And he said to them, "Why are you afraid, O men of little faith?" Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, "What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?"

Fr. Raymond Philip discussed the various reactions to the storm in Rembrand’s painting “The Storm on the Sea of Galilee.” Some tried to fix the sail, one is throwing up over the side, some look angry at Jesus... and one in the shadows who can barely be seen, is kneeling at Jesus’ feet. He asked the question: in a storm, which one are you?

One of these men will be coming to the Mission, Fr. Napuli.

Bishop McElroy ordained two men into the priesthood today in our diocese, Raymond Philip Napuli and Manuel Del Río. Bishop's homily included:

"Some would ay that this is a hard day to be ordained a priest. But I say to you that this is a glorious moment to become a priest for Jesus Christ because times such as these reveal potently that the priest must stand alongside his people in their suffering, condemning structures of sin and racial prejudice, helping to forge a world in which the Gospel values of justice, compassion and peace trample those of inequality, hatred and division.

"This is a glorious day to be ordained a priest of Jesus Christ because in our priesthood we preach that hope can never be extinguished nor dimmed by any pandemic, any hatred or any fear."

I just got a phone call from Fr. Bill Springer this morning, checking in to find out how our family is doing. I can't thank the priest enough for reaching out to his flock during this difficult time. And this is why we love this parish!
Very Inspirational attending Mass with all of this history
Please help. My family is in need they have a young child. Work is hard with the weather lately so they are short on money.

Felicidades y un saludo en el día de San Diego desde su pueblo natal, San Nicolás del Puerto San Diego fué recibido así al entrar en su calle, una enorme petalada de flores llovía del cielo.
Please join us for a Peaceful Prayerful Protest at the Diocese Pastoral Center (see attached flyer for details) on September 28, from 11:00-12:00. Bring your rosaries and a protest sign (if you wish). The time is now you guys, we can no longer just sit and watch our church be destroyed from the inside out. As Bishop Fulton Sheen foretold many years ago, the laity will save the church. Guess what? That’s us!!!! Let’s show our fidelity to Jesus in a public way by partaking in this rally. We plan to meet at 10:45! If you feel that the attached flyer needs to be modified to suit your audience, feel free to do so. Please Blast this to your distribution lists and let’s get as many people as we can to attend this event I think once you read the link here regarding St John the Evangelist here in SD, Hillcrest, you will clearly see what is at stake. The Pastor at the time, Fr. John Dolan, who is now our auxiliary Bishop of San Diego “kicked the Legion of Mary out of the parish, alleging its half-dozen members were not enough to justify their meeting on SJE property; meanwhile, Bianco's "LGBT Bible study" group — with fewer members than the Legion of Mary chapter — was allowed to remain. Dolan also ordered a statue of the Virgin Mary installed by Fr. Dillard (and used for parishioners' house-to-house Rosary chain) to be removed from the church. Daily Rosary group locked out, praying in SJE parking lot For his part, Bianco put an end to the Rosary before daily Mass, falsely asserting that parishioners were bothered by it.” (Per Church Militant’s interview.) Once the new Pastor arrived he did allow the rosary group back into the church. But just let that sink in. The now Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego, John Dolan, allowed all of these things to happen while he was the Pastor. What’s next?? Your Parish, My Parish??? If must stop NOW!!! Read here for yourself what happened to St. John the Evangelist- here in San Diego https://www.churchmilitant.com/news/article/homosexualist-cabal-persecutes-faithful-san-diego-catholics Some ideas for protest signs; Not a dime until you resign Sipe told you about McCarrick and you did nothing Vigano spoke the truth-prove he is wrong God said if you love me keep my commandments! “The Wolf in Sheep’s clothing needs to go” Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, Our Hero! Why are our shepherds helping Fr. J. Martin build a bridge to Hell? Silence Stops Now It’s Diabolical Disorientation not Clericalism! If you are unable to make the Rally, please keep us in prayer. It’s not easy to stand up and speak the truth, it’s a whole lot easier to just sit by and watch! With God all things are possible! Onward Christian Soldiers! Hope to see you all there!
