05/05/2021

Since September 2020, Textile Center and Women of Color Quilters Network (WCQN) have been co-presenting We Are the Story, a series of group and solo quilt exhibitions in the Twin Cities curated by Carolyn L. Mazloomi. This initiative came together with urgency last summer when Minneapolis became the epicenter of the nationwide protest movement against police brutality and racism in America following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020.

As they enter the final months of the We Are the Story initiative in the Twin Cities, Textile Center seeks your support during the SpringForwardMN campaign to help fund the publication of Carolyn L. Mazloomi's new 254-page softcover book We Are the Story: A Visual Response to Racism, to be released by Paper Moon Publishing this month.

Textile Center has committed to funding the design and printing costs for this publication, and they've set a fundraising goal of $20,000. As of April 30, they have raised $7,500. Will you consider contributing toward their goal by making a tax-deductible gift? Donations can be made through GiveMN online here. We thank you in advance for offering your help to defray publication expenses that retail sales alone cannot cover, as well as helping them make these books available to Minnesota school and public libraries.

We Are the Story: A Visual Response to Racism catalogues 122 quilts that were part of two juried group and four solo exhibitions presented in Minneapolis during the past eight months, and its release coincides with the juried exhibitions Racism: In the Face of Hate We Resist at Textile Center, open now through June 12, 2021.

To learn more about We Are the Story, visit: textilecentermn.org/wearethestory.

“In a time and place where more and more of our public conversations involve ‘dealing with the homeless problem’ the works in this show really exemplify what it means to see marginalized people in a human light. As three-dimensional people.” -Jim Lovell, M.S.W.

VAM will be joined by Jim Lovell as he walks us through the themes and topics in Carolyn Harper's Look Me in the Eye, on exhibition in the Spotlight Gallery May 4-July 3.
