A macro- and micro-economic approach to the contemporary art market

Contemporary art will always be the art market’s infrathin: constantly criticised for its record auction prices, its difficulty of interpretation and its inherently subversive nature. It’s no secret that Takashi Murakami, perhaps Japan’s most well-known contemporary artist, is also an avid art collector himself. He began collecting early on as a student, buying prints and photographs, but expanded his purchases as he became more successful. In a rare move his collection, now at over 1000 pieces and stored in an industrial building in the suburbs of Tokyo, will be on display for the public.

Part I of the new Art Directives photo-essay series, "The Greatest Private Collections"

The Anderson Collection, San Fransisco Bay Area, currently held at Stanford University.

The collection has been built over the last 50 years by Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson, affectionately known as “Hunk” and “Moo” and by their daughter, Mary Patricia Anderson Pence, known as “Putter.” It is notable that the Andersons built their collection without the assistance of outside curators or consultants. Over the years, Hunk and Moo spent a great deal of time and energy educating themselves about art history and the individual artists whose work they collect.
