University of Utah Anthropology

University of Utah Anthropology Offered by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Utah, welcome to the Department of Anthropology! Be sure to like our student club page: https://www.facebook.com/utahanthroclub/

Anthropology is the comparative, evolutionary and historical study of humankind. Our department takes a theoretically driven, empirically-informed approach to this study, and has special expertise in archaeology, genetics, behavioral ecology, demography. Our regional expertise is strongest in Africa, Australia, New Guinea, Latin America and western North America. We have a small but influential faculty, four of whom (Harpending, Hawkes, O'Connell, Wiessner) are members of the National Academy of Sciences. Many faculty members do research that crosses disciplinary and sub-disciplinary lines, and we encourage students to do the same.

Congratulations to Journey Bly for being selected for the 2019 Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award in the College of Social and Behavioral Science. Journey, along with her faculty mentor and nominator Leslie Knapp, will be honored at the Undergraduate Research Awards Luncheon on April 8, 2019.

"After graduating with my BA, I plan to pursue a Master's degree in Human Genetics, Genetic Counseling, or a related subject. In the Modern Molecular Genetics Lab at the U, I am working with Michael Zaccheo on his research on gene DRD4, a dopamine receptor that has been found to be related to reward, addiction, and impulsivity. I am using blood samples from Cambridge macaques to extract DNA, run PCRs on it, put it through gel electrophoresis, prepare and submit it to be sequenced, then analyze the sequences to identify repeats that may correlate with behavior." -Journey Bly
