Landmark Center was built in 1902 and originally served as the Federal Court House and Post office for the Upper Midwest. In the 1970s, a group of determined citizens saved the building from the wrecking ball and restored it to its previous grandeur. It was on the National Register of Historic Places and reopened to the public as Landmark Center in 1978. Today, Landmark Center serves as a cultural center for music, dance, theater, exhibitions, public forums, and hosts countless special events. Owned by Ramsey County, Landmark Center is managed by Minnesota Landmarks, a not-for-profit organization. Landmark Center also houses Anita's Cafe, Landmarket Gift Shop, five gallery spaces, and a number of St. Paul's premier arts and culture organizations.

While LC is closed to the public we're posting about your special requests, and our staff's favorite Landmark Center features and events. #LCgoesremote

Today, we're answering Donna Jarvis' request for a post about "that beautiful old fashioned elevator!" // Originally located in the southeast corner of the building (near today's information center and gift shop), the elevator was reconstructed in its current location in the 1970s restoration effort, incorporating elements from the original elevator in its design.

If you have a special request for us to feature or a question about the building, history, or an event, leave a comment and we'll include it in the coming days/weeks.

While LC is closed to the public we're posting about your special requests, and our staff's favorite Landmark Center features and events.

Today, Rental Events Assistant, Alix shares her favorite part of working at LC // "My favorite part about working at Landmark Center is enjoying its beauty, and being able to share that with our clients. I love that at every turn there is a new architectural moment. On my first day I took this picture, because I was just astounded at how each individual aspect of the building is special in its own way - even the stairs! I get to re-experience that feeling each time we give a tour to someone who hasn't seen the space before. It is so unique!"

If you have a special request for us to feature or a question about the building, history, or an event, leave a comment and we'll include it in the coming days/weeks.

While LC is closed to the public we're posting about your special requests, and we asked what you wanted to see or know more about.

Our first request came from Dana Voller, "Which event attracted the most visitors in 2019?" // In 2019, the Sundays at Landmark event, "Day of Irish Dance" on Sunday, March 17, 2019 had around 6,000 people came through our doors between 11 am - 5 pm. The Irish/St. Patrick Day events at Landmark Center are produced in partnership with Irish Music and Dance Association (IMDA). Thanks for this question Dana! We definitely missed the Irish festivities this year, so we're happy to revisit 2019!

If you have an event, building, or history question for us leave a comment and we'll post about it in the coming days and weeks!

Dear Friends of Landmark Center,

Landmark Center and the Irish Music and Dance Association (IMDA) have made the difficult decision to cancel our 2020 Day of Irish Dance and St. Patrick’s Celebration, scheduled for March 15th and 17th respectively. This would have been our 39th year of celebrating Irish culture and heritage, and the decision was not made lightly.

The IMDA and Landmark Center have always focused on hosting a safe, family friendly event – where everyone from newborns to great-grandparents are welcome. Since this morning, the cases of COVID-19 in Minnesota have nearly doubled. With this is mind, neither Landmark Center, nor IMDA, would risk the health and wellbeing of our artists, dancers, musicians, volunteers and attendees. We appreciate the patience of the community as we have taken the time to consider the implications and logistics of these events.
