Landmark Center was built in 1902 and originally served as the Federal Court House and Post office for the Upper Midwest. In the 1970s, a group of determined citizens saved the building from the wrecking ball and restored it to its previous grandeur. It was on the National Register of Historic Places and reopened to the public as Landmark Center in 1978. Today, Landmark Center serves as a cultural center for music, dance, theater, exhibitions, public forums, and hosts countless special events. Owned by Ramsey County, Landmark Center is managed by Minnesota Landmarks, a not-for-profit organization. Landmark Center also houses Anita's Cafe, Landmarket Gift Shop, five gallery spaces, and a number of St. Paul's premier arts and culture organizations.

While Landmark Center is still closed to the public, we are posting your special requests and our staff's favorite Landmark Center features and events. #LCgoesremote
Today's feature comes from our Director of Community Programs Judy Brooks, “My favorite thing(s) are the fun, unexpected architectural surprises that people often don't see:

*The bat and the owl among the arches over the front porch. The owl was frequently used in Greco-Roman architecture to symbolize wisdom. The bat...who knows?

*The "faces" on the columns on our front porch. Legend has it that the stone carvers left behind their likenesses as "autographs”. Now THAT'S attention to detail!"

If chicken is not on the menu tonight, maybe some soup is what you're craving! Our partner from Sierra Leone, Mimie Mogaka, shared this delicious looking recipe for Creamy Beef and Tomato Peanut soup:

Ingredients
 1 30oz of creamy peanut butter
 2 medium onions
 2 bell peppers (mixed green & red)
 2 large Maggi cubes (African season)
 2.5 Tsp of salt
 1.5 Tsp of black pepper
 3 Habanero peppers for little spicy (add more for hot)
 2.5lb beef with bones or just beef if you preferred
 2 medium fruit tomatoes
 6oz of paste tomato
 10 cups of water

Preparing:
1. Cut the beef to your desired size and wash; use 1tsp salt, 1 large Maggi cube,
and the black pepper to season the beef
2. Cut the onion, bell peppers, Habanero pepper and tomatoes all together and put in a bowl
3. Put peanut butter in a large bowl and mix with the 10 cups of water till it well blended with the water.

Instructions:
1. Put the beef in a large heavy pot and let it steam with just the water from washing, steam for 10 to 15 minutes (use a wooden spoon to mix contents frequently).
2. Add peanut butter to the beef and let it boil for 20 to 25 minutes (mix frequently)
3. Then add all the rest of the ingredients to the pot and let it boil for another 20 to 25 minutes (mix frequently)
4. Lower the heat to a simmer
5. Serve over rice.

Our Senegalese partner, Khadi Airdara, sent us this family receipe for Yassa Poulet (Chicken) - A Senegalese favorite. (She had to translate it from French for us to use!) #LCgoesremote #UrbanExpedition

Ingredients
 For two people
 4 chicken leg quarters or chicken tights or 1 whole chicken cut up into pieces
 4 medium onions
 Lime or lemon juice, vinegar, green olives
 Salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, ail ginger powder or fresh grinded (optional),
dijon mustard,
 1 cup white rice

Preparation
1. Marinate the chicken by cleaning the chicken then pat dry. Marinade the chicken by
mixing 1 tsp each of salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, mustard, ground ginger, ail,
the juice of 1 lime or lemon and about 1 tbsp of vinegar. Mix well, marinade the
chicken and let rest in the fridge for at least 1 hour.
2. Marinade the onions. Cut the onion into wedges. Make the same marinade mix as
above and mix with the onions Adjust the spices to your taste. Let rest also.
3. Grill the chicken outside or bake in the oven (350 degrees for 45-50 minutes)
4. Saute the onions in about a cup of oil, cook the onions slowly, stirring every so often
to caramelize them. Right before they are done, add the grilled chicken, lower the
heat again and let the flavor blend. Add the olives. This is the time to adjust the taste
if needed by adding more spices.
5. Serve over cooked white

Today's feature comes from former building tenant, Dan Hintz, "So many great spots. I’ll go with a lawyer one. I would occasionally have depositions or client meetings in the 4th floor room with the long table. People were always very impressed by my “conference” room." // That room is Courtroom 408 or "The Sanborn Room," named for Judges Walter Henry Sanborn and John B. Sanborn, Jr. who each kept their chambers here while serving on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Their portraits hang in the room, still overseeing their court.

If you have a special request for us to feature or a question about the building, history, or an event, leave a comment and we'll include it in the coming days/weeks.

Today's question comes from an Instagram comment from @mrs.musiccity, "Approximately how many events do you guys host each year?" // Great question! While every year the exact number varies, Landmark Center is home to approximately 1,000 events each year. From festivals and weddings, to lectures and piano recitals, there is usually something happening in the building. This year will be a unique experience for LC, our partners, and our usual guests, but be sure to visit us and our partner organizations online!

If you have a special request for us to feature or a question about the building, history, or an event, leave a comment and we'll include it in the coming days/weeks.

While it may seem like nothing is normal and you aren’t sure what to do, today is a day to use your individual power to make a difference in our community.

Celebrate #GivingTuesdayNow, if you are able, and please consider a gift to a non-profit serving many community members who are in need of your support.

At a time when all races, faiths, and political views are feeling the impacts of the pandemic, one things that brings us together is giving. Whether you are checking in on a neighbor or friend, sharing a skill or project, or donating to causes-- all acts of giving are meaningful, generous, and needed more than ever.

To support Landmark Center and its programs during this time, visit www.givemn.org/Minnesota-Landmarks or our website www.landmarkcenter.org/support-us. Thank you!

Today is the first day of #GiveAtHomeMN!
Help Landmark Center and other non-profits from the safety and comfort of your home with #GiveAtHomeMN (May 1-8), a special week of giving to raise awareness and funds, coordinated by our friends at GiveMN.org.

During difficult times, a good support network of family, friends, and community members makes all the difference. All of us at Landmark Center are so grateful to be part of a community dedicated to lifting each other up during this pandemic, and hope our #LCgoesremote virtual programs bring you hope, entertainment, humanity, and connectedness – when we’re all feeling a little separated and disjointed.

You can support Landmark Center and it’s (now virtual) community programs by making a tax-deductible contribution at: www.givemn.org/Minnesota-Landmarks or our website www.landmarkcenter.org/support-us
