Museum supporters fought the good fight

From all of us, thank you, to whoever wrote this opinion article. It was very nice to read about the support you show to all of us, despite the difficulties we're facing trying to get past the many road blocks that seem to come our direction. We truly appreciate the kind words in this article and want the writer to know that. There are some that have expressed anger at the Board's decision, some who are saddened by the move from a historical building, and many more who have shared encouraging words and excitement at the possibility of this collection moving all across the state and region.

We will continue to fight for these artifacts to be on display, whether that is in mobile displays or in a smaller facility. We will continue to stay true to our mission, because it's a mission we believe in.

If it is the end — if there will be no more last-ditch efforts to reopen the National Military Heritage Museum south of Downtown — we can live with this.

Below, you will find the links to the press release, March visitor counts, and April visitor counts.

We are posting these to show that, unfortunately, there just isn't enough income and donations coming to cover the overhead costs at the current location. We will be working hard over the next several months and onward to move to a smaller location, make the museum mobile, and further our mission. The Board, the staff, and the volunteers are not giving up on this museum, and are doing everything they can to make sure it continues and thrives.

Military Museum shutting its doors once again

We want to take this time to thank everyone who has come to see the museum's new layout. Unfortunately, there just hasn't been enough interest in the museum to keep up with its overhead costs. Along with that, we received word from the insurance company that our cost was due to increase drastically on May 1st.

We would like to stress that "shutting its doors" does not mean the museum/society is closing down completely. This is a move, decided on by the Board, to try to facilitate a move to a smaller building and turn it into a mobile museum. This simply means that the museum will no longer be open for the public to come through at the current location. Unfortunately, we would not be able to have visitors without first dealing with the high insurance costs.

The buildings the society currently owns create such an overhead, that it is not feasible for us to continue to operate with admissions and donations that do not meet those costs.

We will be posting a press release soon, which goes into much greater detail.

We want to thank all of you who have and continue to support the Board, the staff, and the volunteers. We continue to strive to keep this collection safe, and are working on ways to bring it to an even bigger community by making it mobile and reducing overhead to allow for lower costs to visitors.

The National Military Heritage Museum at 7th & Messanie streets in St. Joseph will close by the end of this month.

04/02/2016

The Board of Directors had a meeting on Thursday night to discuss many things. One of the items brought to the table, and approved by the Board, was to take off Sunday hours. Unfortunately, there have been almost no visitors on Sundays. It isn't feasible for the Society to pay the overhead of running the building on a day when there is no income being brought in. Therefore, we will be editing the website and this page to reflect that the museum will not be open on Sundays.

This would make the hours Wed-Fri 11-6pm and Sat 9-4pm. We hope this isn't an inconvenience to anyone, as it will help the museum not waste their resources. Thank you all for being understanding!

03/26/2016

This is just a reminder that we will be closed tomorrow for the Easter holiday, but you can still come see us today! The second newsletter for this month is running a bit late, as there's not a whole lot of updates to include in it yet. Keep an eye out, though. It will be going out this week!

We hope you all are having, and will have, a great weekend!

03/20/2016

The museum will be closed today for a special staff day. They will be using today to work on collaborations on the new display at the mall and other various administrative tasks for the museum. It will also be closed next Sunday, March 27th for the Easter holiday. We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you so much!

You have all been so supportive of the museum's changes. Many of you have given great suggestions on our survey over the weekend. We will answer many of these in the first issue of our newsletter, which will be going out on March 10th.

The staff continue to work on and come up with changes that they would like to see happen at the museum. It is the public's support that makes these changes happen! The children of some of the staff have been reading and celebrating Dr. Seuss all week, as many of your children may be as well.

A fun military related fact about Dr. Seuss: During World War II, he made posters for the U.S. Treasury and made training films for the U.S. Army Air Corps.

03/01/2016

Something we would like to note to everyone is that at this time, the museum will still be cash only. We do not accept paper checks, but we are currently working on getting our credit card processing up. We hope to have that up and running very soon!

The staff of the National Military Heritage Museum are happy to announce that the doors will reopen Friday, March 4th, at 11:00 am!

There will be an open house on March 3rd from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

The new museum hours will be Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The museum will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The new admission rates are: Adults $7.00, Children 12 and under $ 4.00, Active Duty Military Free, and Retired Military $4. Military reduced rates are given with a valid military ID.

The new hours and rates are also posted on the website. A statement has been posted to the website, as well.

We hope all of you can make it this weekend to be the first to experience the museum's new layout and features. Changes will continue to be made at the museum as needed, but the staff feel the museum is ready for the public to once again enjoy the artifacts it has to offer!

Hello everyone! We just wanted to give you more updates on the progress of the renovations/new layout. It's coming together great, thanks to the wonderful minds and skills of the staff and volunteers! There's still more to be done. These are just snippets of the features that are getting close to finalization.

We would like to take a minute to ask you all to please consider making a donation to help the museum. There is still much to be done. The staff have programs and features in mind that they would like to implement, but will need your help in doing so. Some of the ideas right now are kiosks that play sound and video of information for each display, programs for children, and of course, the museum needs many updates and repairs. They are pouring their hearts and souls into this project, along with working very long hours to see this through. Please consider donating to help them meet their goals and make this museum one of the best museums in St. Joe!

As promised, the below link is the new website for the National Military Heritage Museum. We are very happy with this website and are still continuing to add information to make it better. We will also provide pictures of the progress on the new layout tomorrow. Thank you all!

The National Military Heritage Museum honors our Nation’s Armed Forces through education and preservation of its military history. The museum houses a collection of over 150 years of military history representing all five military branches. We are 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

We would like to provide you all with a few updates:

First of all, we will be posting the new website later tonight or tomorrow. We will post again with the new link, as well as update it here on the page.

Second, we are aware of an issue with our main phone line. We have been unable to get a technician out to fix it, but we are trying to get this solved.

Last, the staff has been working hard on floor plans, gathering materials, and building to create a new layout within the museum. We hope to have the pictures for these renovations up by the end of the week. You will all be very surprised by the new floor plan, I promise!

Please keep an eye out for the renovation pictures and the new website link. We will be posting those soon. We have all been very busy trying to make this museum feel like a new experience for all of you. We are all extremely excited for you to see the progress and to finally open the doors so you can experience it for yourself.

Thank you all for your support!

Along with the current fundraising projects, we have created a crowd fund with GoFundMe to help us raise the money needed for repairs and enhancements. We would like to ask all of you to please share this link to help spread the word. Thank you all for you assistance! One step at a time, we will make this a museum you'll always want to visit.

Our director's spouse volunteered to help raise funds and created this crowd fund. All donations are mailed directly to the museum monthly via First Giving, so no staff member or volunteer directly receives these funds.

National Military Heritage Museum closes until spring 2016

As many of you may have read in the news paper in early September, the museum has been temporarily closed until Spring 2016.

There is a new staff, who are diligently working to clean up, organize, add new exhibits, and bring in new elements to the museum. We are currently working with a very limited budget, so our focus right now is our fundraising efforts. We will be implementing new membership and volunteer programs when we reopen in the spring, so look forward to new levels of membership and benefits. Currently, though, membership and volunteer programs are closed until the museum reopens in the spring. We are still accepting donations, both monetary and tangible items. We will also be launching a new website in the next week or two, so keep an eye out for the update when it launches.

We greatly appreciate all of the support we have received from the community. The new staff is excited to implement these changes and bring this museum into the 21st century to make it more fun and educational. We also want to thank you all for your patience while we do all of this work.
