Update on the 2N. I have been slowly going over the crane, lubing, freeing up tight joints, adjusting the frictions and brakes. All has gone well until I tried to work the jaw clutch for the "sprag disconnect". I tried applying PB Blaster, heat and beat, to the triangular bell crank/interlock but it would not pivot. Out comes the smoke wrench, and I burned off the two mounting bolts for pivot mount, and removed the whole assembly. Now working from a vise, more heat and beat was applied, and the pivot came loose. I earlier mentioned the inter lock feature that this assembly is part of. The purpose of the interlock is a safety between the boom sprag disconnect and the the boom dog. The sprag clutch cannot be disconnected unless the boom hoist dog is engaged, and vis versa, the boom hoist dog cannot be released unless the boom sprag clutch is engaged. This is to prevent a "Live boom" situation. You can bypass this interlock, but it is not advised. The reason for the sprag clutch disconnect is so the draw-works can be run backwards. The problem with running the draw-works backwards is the boom hoist sprag will catch, and if the load is heavy enough, you will start "booming up". If you have a load on the hook, and you want it to come down thru the brake slowly you can do the following. The load is hanging in the air, engage the hoist friction. Disconnect the master clutch, engage the boom hoist dog, disconnect the sprag clutch. Now you can ease off the hoist brake, and the hoist drum will turn the draw-works for a controlled load lowering. When I get the bell crank installed, I will update with more photos. One thing about this crane is you have to have an assortment of shortened/bent/modified wrenches to work on them.
