Recently someone said something about us younguns preparing to get old. I’d always prepare to grow up. And thought I’d reached it. I grew up and joined the Army.
Grew up and went to college…and got a degree.
I grew up and got married(not once but thrice).
I grew up and had kids.
I grew up and had a dog and a cat and some chickens…and rabbits…
I haven’t however, grown up and gotten ducks or larger livestock. I’m ok with that.
I wasn’t prepared for the prepare to get old comment though.
Getting old can be tough. I’m surrounded by folks older than I am. I’m watching as dementia is taking spouses pre-death. And the love and care that is poured out by one and not remembered or noticed by the other. A loss without the loss. Pre grief.
It’s been just over a year that I lost my grandma and her son my dad. Grandma for me was unexpected. Dad was dying, but his timeline was dramatically escalated by a fall.
Am I ready to grow up and…get old? Are you?
What does that look like for you? How are you preparing to age up? What are some tips and tricks you have?
And while being older, we are still raising a little. She says I’m in here, and she drew a lovely monster too!
