With sad heart, I sent the following email to Twilla Cunningham, former president of AU:

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

I, Mary A. Stephenson, do hereby tender my resignation from the Board of Directors and all jobs relating to Artists United, Inc. This action becomes final as of December 31, 2013, at 12:00 P.M. as determined at the Annual Board of Directors Meeting on April 24th at Surfside Beach, S. C., and in conjunction with the cessation of the entire organization.

You may have wondered WHY I have not been posting on the AU page…. Sorry, but I had thought it best to keep my thoughts and unhappiness over AU’s closing to myself. On December 31st, 2013, Artists United, Inc will completely cease to exist. That decision was made during the Board of Directors’ Annual Meeting in April before the close of GAP this year. Why? For me, that question is still debatable. Was it my fault? Was it the other Board Member’s fault? Was it the lost members’ fault? Probably a lot of all the above. I probably should and could have done a much better job. So could other Board Members. Members that dropped out of AU hurt the organization. Those that no longer attended GAP also hurt the group. But now those things are like the proverbial “Water under the bridge”. It’s done. It’s over for AU. I intend to keep the ‘G A P friends’ group page in operation, with Glenda Ownby as a second Administrator. We hope to see each and everyone of you on that page. A final decision about this particular page will be made no later than Dec. 31, 2013.

The teachers will be Mark Polomchak, Dorothy Dent, Robert Warren, Louise Jackson, Kitty Gorrell and Carol Hoffman!! There is a second "Artists United" page showing on Facebook that is NOT our page!! Apparently a Mr. David June is operating that second page, and it is not authorized or controlled by Artists United, Inc. or its Board of Directors.

AU Members - we have the opportunity to attend Art Quest 2014 in Cherokee, NC, sponsored by Kitty and Chuck Gorrell. They will even furnish us a room so we can have a brief AU meeting there. More info will be forth coming! Are you interested? Please respond....

By now, our members have received their GAP Newsletter with the bad news that there will not be a Great Artists Paint-in (GAP) next year. Why? Simply because we do not have the funds. Why not? Because for two years we have substantially lost money at GAP. Plus one of the teachers scheduled this year could not come, and that caused us to have attendees to cancel GAP. Many of our 'regular GAPees' could not attend this year's convention due to illness, family problems, money problems, or other unknown reasons. We have had to dip into AU's bank account to pay for GAP for the last two times, so all funds are now depleted. I'm sorry I did not say anything to you all before now, but I've been too sad and emotional over GAP's loss to speak before now. I hope to see you all again somewhere, sometime. My love and admiration to each and everyone of you.

Most of us are home after GAP, & met some wonderful new friends. Again, our dear friend, Mark Polomchak, helped the attendees create beautiful paintings they will treasure always. We are grateful to Mark for sharing his talents these last few years! Thank you Mark!!~~!!
